I recently sold my Epson 890 and am looking for a new photo printer. I bought my 717 last month and want to match it to a good photo printer. From these forums I have narrowed it down to two manufacturers, Epson or Canon. Can anyone give me their experience with any of the new printers and the 717.

both manufacturers make excellent printers and u cant go wrong with either. It all depends on how much you want to spend and if speed is an issue.

One other printer to consider is the Olympus P-400 dye sublimation printer which i have been using to print photos from my scans and Sony S70 camera and produces superb pictures that are continues tone unlike ink jets and the images are laminated during the printing process...On the down side max image size is 10.19 X 7.64 inches which wouldn't be a problem if your not going to print larger than that. I can't say much regarding print longevity since i've only been using the P-400 for about two months. I have many prints hanging around for fade testing but won't know the results for hopefully a long time..I hear the Epson 2200 and Canon S900/9000 are top ink jet printers and i may get one to supplement the P-400...in any case be sure to check out the Printers and Printing forum for the best advice on printers.

the Epson 2200 is slow but prints archival prints. the canon is fast but the prints are not archival. there are other differences but being able to sell a print or make a family print that can be mounted and will be around for 50 years is important to me so I got an Epson and am happy with it.

I have the epson 2200 and love it. Although i've read it was slow, that is not my experience. I installed a usb 2.0 card and despite arguements to the contrary, i find it prints at a good speed. A full color 8X10 takes aprox 3 minutes at 1400

The arguement was that the printhead was the usb 2.0 bottleneck but those were not my findings...it aso has a parallel connection

setup was quick, no problems of any kind, i run 98...print quality is excellent ......excells in B&W.....max print size....13X44

ink consumption is approx $.01/sq inch..perhaps a little more..9.95 per cartridge and going down

i had to learn the HARD way not to use Epson printers anymore just because unless you use the printer at least once or twice a week (which i dont) then the printing nozzles are almost guaranteed to clog which is usually not correctable.

now why the heck Epson cant be like HP and put their printing nozzles in the cartridges themselves is beyond me. that way everytime you replace an ink cartridge, you're also getting new print nozzles. so usually, as a rule of thumb, HP printers always cost a bit more than the Epsons do but i think their life span speaks for themselves. although i will say that the Epson printers do produce very nice results but what good will that do ya if the printer's gonna have a short life span?

and by the way, i currently own an HP 5550 and i love it. :)

My Epson 785EPX (~$200) worked extremely well with my 707. I haven't printed out a 717 pix as yet, though. The 785 may be a step down from what you already had but, again, it has been impressive. I post pix of my kids outside my office door regularly, and I and get a lot of "Wow!"s. Print cartridges last as long as I would expect and are (relatively) cheap. In my view, Epson makes the best inkjet photo printers.

I have an older Stylus 740 that gets very intermittant use (sometimes not for months) and I have had it since March of '99. I have never had a problem. My ink cartrige is still from the origianal batch of 99 which expired last year but nonetheless works just fine. The images are still very nice but of course you can do better for half of waht I paid back then.

You have other options than going with either inkjet or dye-sub.

Find yourself a photo lab that makes use of the Fuji Frontier system.

http://www.fujifilm.com/JSP/fuji/epartners/MapFindPage.jsp ;jsessionid=9KpnG18IOV5iNiEwZ3DkAN6QFdywp1pXLofsLgBZ5vpi5wHoMKjv!-1855523671!-1408040624!80!443?photo=true

In some retail locations, the Fuji Frontier lab is accompanied by the Aladdin kiosk, where you can place your memory card (ALL of the major types) or a CDR for reading and placing an order for the shots you desire at the size you desire.

The prints are printed to the same standard and quality and on the same paper that you'd get for film prints. Come back in less than an hour at some locations, and pick 'em up.

The only thing missing is that you're not doing it at home, but the quality is better than anything you're going to get at home at present.

And the SAVINGS... SAVINGS... With some locations charging as low as:
$0.20 for 4x6
$0.75 for 5x7
$3.00 for 8x10 (usually less than $2.00 at some locations)

I'm an uncle!!!

I have had Epson printers for several years, currently have the 1280 and the 700 (for B&W with MIS inks), and have never had a clogging, or any other problem. Not to slam HP printers, as far as I know they are all front loaders, which means you are restricted in the type of paper you can use. Also their paper is very poor, in my opinion.

I have the 707.

I recently bought the epson c62 and I love it. I thought I was going to buy either the 2200(?) or 800(0?) (ie $700cdn printers) for oversized prints. Then I stumbled upon the c62 2 days after its release here for $150cdn. The prints are gorgeous. I have previously used an HP 710 as a stop gap. Was really humming and hawing about needing oversized capacity.

Anyway, whenever someone sees a print off this epson, they are amazed.
Good bang for the buck, IMO.

I had clogging problems with my previous Epson printer (700, if I remember correctly), but it all started when I tried ink cartridges made by other brands (they were supposed to work fine with Epson, for half the price...) Now I own a 1290, I always use Epson ink cartridges and it works to perfection. ?:°)

Thanks to all for your input. I dont' know what I am going to do yet, but I'm sure with either Canon or Epson, I'll be a winner. Thanks also to Ulysses for that bit of info about Fuji Frontier. I will look into that. I'd be lost in the digital world without this forum. Thanks again,

Gar

I had a brief time with a PhotoStylus several years ago and it's nozzles would routinely get clogged when I didn't do enough printing. Changing the cartridge was fiddly and I lost some because I did something wrong. Those two problems were enough to make me not use the thing.

I don't print color with my new CAnon for several days between usages. So far, no problem with clogging. Check on the Printers forum here and do a search in the archives on the Epson and clogging. See if anything comes up.

The Canon 850 i has 4 ink cartridges, it does borderless printing ,and the drops are only 2 picoliters the smallest in the industry, and the printer is only$169.00 at best Buy

I have seen that Epson and Canon offer borderless print, but it I THINK it involves printing from a roll or using special paper that have borders that tear off. Do either of those printers actually print borderless from regular sized paper stock?
