Torn Water Color Paper Edges how?

Doug,

At last count I think there was 792.7 ways to do this but I'll give you just one of them..hehe.

Load your image
Expand your canvas to give yourself a border to work in
Use a brush that simulates the edge look you want
Brush around image to get desired effect
Select the border area
Make a new layer of this selection and add shadows, strokes, etc.

This is just one way but is one of the more powerful as it allows extreme edge customization. I started a thread a couple of weeks or so ago on this very thing.

Anyone know how to create nice torn water color paper edges like on
the image on Janee's main page.

http://www.myjanee.com/

Just sent her a note asking how. Thought I'd ask here too.

Thanks,

Doug

Thanks VG. I looked back at your posts and didn't see the thread. Would you mind posting the URL?

Also, finding a brush that gets to Janee's edge I haven't been able to do.

Well... looks like we'll find out from her soon enough how she does it.

Thanks again,
Doug

Doug,

Also, it doesn't matter too much what brush you use. Just remember that with brushes, you mimic real world use. You are not trying to achieve a one stroke effect as that is just too limiting. Brush the edges using various sizes, types and opacities of brushes. Your opacity will determine how much brush 'effect' is applied. Just try to 'tear' off pieces of the edge with a brush.

As I said, this is just one of many ways but gives you almost unlimited options. It may be too time consuming but is well worth it, at least to me.

VG

The shadow can be done using Inside Shadow on the inverted selection. No need for any type of mask or extra shadow layer. Outer glow can also achieve an even more diverse effect provided you use it on the proper selection. Even Stroke with a gradient can achieve similar effects. Copying the selected layer with the selection intact will allow for these effects. Just a shortcut that will knock out several of the tute steps.

Thanks Marlene and VG. As you all are obviously well aware, there are sooo many roads up the mountain. It's what's so freakin cool about this medium! And after a while, programs like photoshop start making some sense. I guess it's like learning to play the violin. Pretty soon, all that racket starts to sound like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, or if you're lucky, The Violin Concerto No.1. :-)

Hey there everyone!

Yes, it is quite true that there are many ways to skin these Photoshoppable cats! For the record, my ways to do stuff are never the shortcuts. And if i do happen to do something a short way, it is by accident!

My goals in my tuts are to teach the use of the program, to teach free thinking about how to solve problems, to teach people to develop their own eye to what they like.. and, as you say, to encourage and inspire. I love it when someone takes some piddlin' thing that i've done in a tutorial, says to him/herself, "hey! I can do better than THIS!" and then shows me the result. :)

Janee......you're the greatest.....you make me think and explore...... that expands my capabilities. Your website is one of the better I've been to, and I've been at plenty. I have it bookmarked and plan on doing a lot more of your tutorials.

Always looking to learn more!

Thanks for all the help!
