I still need an inexpensive digital camera gift for a grandchild. I came across the kodak M575 at Costco for $79.

Does anyone have any experience with this M575 camera. Thanks in advance for your feedback. Merry Christmas!

From the photos I have seen posted on forums this is a very capable camera, have you checked out the C190 and C195 both very good cameras and great value for money?

Merry Christmas to you also.

I just got my M575 two weeks ago. The camera offers a lot of value in its price range. Pros are 28mm lens, IS, 5x zoom, 3 inch screen, HD video, and of course the Kodak color and white balance. Now the cons, too much noise and smearing when iso is more than 200. Lens is soft when fully zoomed at 5x. These are the two biggest cons I have with the M575.

I had the z915, the high iso and lens was much better. I also have the C195 for work and the pic quality is similar to the m575. For 79, it is a good value for the child.

Here are some photos I took with the M575. Classic Kodak colors, I kept the ISO low to keep down the noise. Since I resized the photos down to 960 pixels, the pics still look good.

Here are some sample photos using ISO 320 or 400. For indoor photos with flash, the camera pretty much use ISO 160-400.

Notice the bed photo with the 100% crop. The detail is very soft and mushy. If I zoom in with the lens, it gets worse.

Now check out the two photos below. First one with the M575, second one with my old Canon G2 with the F2.0 lens. It is 14MP vs. 4MP. Look at the hair on my boys. The Kodak at ISO 400 basically smeared the details and colors as well. The Canon at ISO 200 with a bigger sensor kept the detail even with 4MP.

My conclusion for the M575 is that it is not a high ISO or night camera. If you want a compact high ISO that take great night photos, you'll need to look else where. (i.e. Canon S4000, S95, or even my old Fuji F40/F45) For daytime pics, the M575 does just fine.

Wow! Many thanks for all the helpful posts-

The M575 looks like a "go." However, compared to the Canon G-2 image, one can easily see that moving up to 14mp did not necessarily provide better image quality to us end users.

Thanks again, and Merry Christmas!
