Just when I had decided on the 7HI.......

Just when I had decided on the 7HI, Buydig raised the price to $999.00 [still a good price] and lowered the Olympus E-20 to $1149.00. Now what do I do. I like the zoom and speed of the 7HI, but the low noise of the E-20 makes quite a plus for the Olympus.

The main use will be general family and travel photography, along with some stuff for various on line catalogs that I do for work, so the flash connections are important. As far as my experience, I use a Oly C3030 now, and believe it or not, still shoot my OLD Minolta XD-11 35mm when I want to have fun and be creative. Also used to shoot medium format until I had to work for a living, and just did not have the time..........boo hoo!

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thru this forum, I had decided on the 7HI, but am now hung up again.

Thanks,

Gary

I think you answered your own question. I have never owned a E-20, but I think the 7Hi will better meet your needs, especially if you are planning to do a lot of travel photography, because the 7Hi is lighter and has great lens range. Either camera is excellent, but if I were you, I would probably get the 7Hi. Pick one, take the plunge and enjoy!

The 7hi is a better camera functionally. THe e-20 has the same noise problem as the 7i - and believe me it really isn't an issue expect in comparative terms.

The e-20 (i have an e-10) is one of the slowest digicams out. The 7hi is blazingly fast by comparison. Both cameras have a great lens but the e-20 has more chromatic abberation. They both have pro features, but the 7hi has faster shutter speeds, more image customization options, and can actually shoot in raw mode in real world situations. The E-20 can only take 3 shots before it has to pause for about 6 seconds to flus the buffer. The optical viewfinder is nice, but isn't as bright as a real slr viewfinder, plus the lack of any focusing screen guage makes composition a bit less intuitive.

The E-20 is built better (or feels like it) and will be more impressive to a client (perhaps) but the 7hi really is twice the camera featurewise, and the images from both are comparable. The E-20 has a good dynamic range, but the 7hi can also be made to take the same quality shots by using -2 contrast and -.03 ev in most situations.

I have a 7i and an E-10 and while both take good pictures the 7i is far sharper and 100 times faster at everything. I though about getting an e-20, but they simply upgraded the resolution of the e-10 and didn't fix the speed problems etc.

Also, the olympus llcd screens update very choppy - like strobe and really aren't usable for composition.

Shane,

Thanks for the info: I keep forgetting how fast these cameras change: most of the reviews of the E-20 are from the begining of the year....an eon in terms of anything digital.

I just ordered mine from http://www.dbuys.com for $967.00 but they are now at $989.00. http://www.Ibuydigital.com has it for $964.00 and http://www.digitalmegastore.com has it for $963.00 all with high reviews. The funny thing is when you go to each of these websites it looks almost exactly the same. Notice each website has the same cut off picture of the D7HI and all prices for accessories are the same. I ordered it on Tuesday and got an email stating to call them for verification. I called the number and left a message for Jim. I haven't heard back yet and it still hasn't shipped. The reviews are very positive for these guys so I hope I don't regret ordering from them. I will post a followup once I hear from them or receive my camera.

Gary - Any chance of letting us know where we can see some of your catalog work on line?

Some of the stores are actually the same. dbuys and I buy digital list the same street address so I assume they are the same store...why different internet sites with prices that differ by a few $...who knows...anyone in marketing out there that knows why they do this?

I was lucky and bought my 7hi when it was $969 so near low...I was surprised when I checked the price today and it was higher!!...maybe a shortage due to the West Coast dock strike/slowdown.

Just spoke with jim over the phone and he said it should ship today or tomorrow. He didn't try to sell me anything extra at all. Kind of disappointed about processing time so far, I expect better results from a company when I lay down nearly $1k.

I missed the boat on the buydig [liked the feedback they have on this forum] so that is what I am leaning to. Brad, let me know when you get your 7HI> Always looking to save a few $....of couse that means I can buy more toys.........

What happened to the days when customer service actually meant serving the customer?

David,

Most of the catalog work we have done so far is for sites that are used by the automotive industry- such as Covisnt and some for SBC. We have been so busy with their catalogs, we have not finished ours yet.

My heart bleeds for you! A choice of two lousy cameras like those!
Tis a shame the price of the 7Hi went up though.
I think it leaves the E20 some way behind, good a camera as it is.
Enjoy,
