DOH! Is that inches or centimeters?

As a UK resident brought up on a mixture of the imperial (english?)
system and the metric system, I know that I prefer the latter. In
my view we (ie. UK, Europe, USA, World ...) should aim to adopt and
standardise on the metric SI system as quickly as possible. We are
supposed to be doing this here in the UK but progress is painfully
slow (thanks to the head-in-the-sand luddites in our society).
Personally I tend to use both systems interchangeably, but that is
only through force of habit over thirty/forty years -- from now on
I will make a conscious effort to drop imperial and use only
metric, especially when specifying print sizes!

Yes. All units of measurements except SI are antiquated and
obsolete and should be replaced as soon as possible.
Have fun convincing everybody of that.
sigh You're still thinking of the imperial system as the
"standard" system and wonder why you should convert familiar
numbers in imperial to complicated ones in SI. After an SI
conversion, you wouldn't go out and get a 3.96 litre bottle of
milk, you'd buy even litre bottles. You need to convert your way of
thinking, not just the numbers.
Again, WHY should we convert? PS -- they already sell soft drinks in litres. Why? God only knows.
And yes, converting is tough and complicated. But hey, if you want
to stick to a inferior system, be my guest. :)
It's hardly "tough" or "complicated". What it is is expensive, without merit, and will either leave you with even more inconsistencies (re: addresses), or cause even MORE needless expense. Do you really think that the Section, Township, Range system of land ownership will be ababoned?
(Anyway, since it's my opinion that anyone who seriously thinks the
imperial system is better than SI is either stupid or lying, and i
have no wish to discuss with either, this is the end of the
discussion for me)
Better? How about just equal? It's not MY problem if people can't figure out how to remember 3 and 12, and how to multiply and divide by those numbers.

Why do you think there has to be LAWS in Britain FORCING people not to sell things in pounds, etc ?

The people know it's foolish to convert. But we all know that the politicians are wise, and therefore pass these silly laws.
Makes me wonder if Canada, Australia and England (who came up with
the British system) are just on an expensive excercise to convert
to metric just for the heck of it. I personally don't think so. And
England is usually more attached to their traditions than we are...
that's what's really impressive.

It is easier to remember 0 and 100 than 32 and 212. It is easier to
remember 1000 m/km than 5280 ft/mile. And the less details that
people have to remember, the more room for other things.
That's funny. I can remember those numbers quite easily.
We have base 10 because we have ten digits on our two hands. When
working
with computers, base 2 or 16 makes more sense. I can do math in
any three
of the systems but I still prefer base 10 for my check book because
it is
easier. I will admit that long division in base 16 and base 2
takes a bit
of work. And representing some decimal values simply impossible:-)
Doing math in base 16 would be quite natural and easy if that's what you were trained to do all through school. Dividing by 16 and multiplying by 16 would then be simple.
Being easier is a very compelling reason for us to finally teach
and use
the official unit of measurement in the United States. That is a very
rational decision.
It is taught. But nobody cares. Why? Because they can quite easily remember 12 inches per foot.

If somebody claims he gets spectacular 20 x 30 prints from his D30
or D1, I'm not impressed at all. Why? I, like 95% of the rest of
humanity, use the metrical system (centimeters), and 20 x 30 is
just A4 or legal size. It would be of considerable help if the
minority of people who still cling to the old British system of
inches would add a " to indicate it is inches.

End of rant. (For today)

Problem to think in Euros, and for luck is the same value to dolars ;)

They know (again, Britain, Canada, Australia and the rest of the world for that matter) it will save their nation billions in the long run, but they find a lot of resistance from the old fashioned, closed minded, never want to change people. Worse that can happen in the future of the information age is to isolate yourself. Some people think its foolish to convert, but what they know is very narrow.

That is a great example though, how many poeple changed their currency for the sake of savings, simplicity and unity. I apllaud Europe for that and no wonder they are starting to lead the world in several issues. I bet Engalnd will not resist the change of currency for long, we'll see.
