Ordered Fred Miranda's sharpening actions and used PayPal to pay for this with my credit card. The only time in the last 3 weeks I used my credit card then 3 days after ordering Fred Miranda's sharpening actions my credit card company contacted me to ask was it right that I had made transactions for thousands of pounds. My credit limit is only small and these transactions were declined. I informed the credit card company that I had not made any transactions for these large amounts. I have used PayPal once before to purchase Qimage Pro. My credit card company confirmed that I had used PayPal but could not divulge who was claiming the other amounts. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Brian.

Firstly, let's seperate Fred from this. He has nothing to do with your credit card, just Paypal... He does not get to see your credit card number, and so is not connected with this.

Okay, let's look at PayPal. They operate a very secure site, since this is their main business. I strongly doubt that they would allow anyone to access your credit card through them.

I would honestly put this down to coincidence. There are many ways to get credit card numbers, from receipts left in resturants, to stolen statements sent in the mail. Luckily all credit card companies are insured against this kind of thing, and at the most you will suffer is some inconvenience.

Glad that your CC company was nice enough to give you a call about it though.

Log into your paypal account and see if there have been any attempts to send money from your account that weren't made by you. If the claims are coming from Paypal, there's a slight chance that someone hacked into your Paypal account and is trying to send money out of your account.

Surely you know how this reads!

Look, I had a call from my cc card company about 3 years back. Seems a charge had been made to my card from Japan. They wished me to confirm their suspicion that it was fraudulent. I confimed that. They told me to destroy my card and they sent me a new one.

I have no idea how they knew the charge was fraudulent but I sure didn't charge off accusing the last reputable merhant to use the card of fraud!

I have bought some Miranda actions through PayPal. No problem with either PayPal . . . or Fred Miranda.

1. Check paypal account.
2. Check your computer for KeyLoggers or Trojans.
3. Find out where this money is being sent to. (where the payments are going)
4. Check your computer for Keyloggers and Trojans.
5 Dont answer emails asking you for any information.

6. Make sure when you go to PayPal that you type WWW.PAYPAL.COM into your address bar rather than clicking someones link to it.
7. Check your computer for Keyloggers and Trojans.

Ok. Best of luck. Hope I made my point.

Brian. I have had my cc number stolen 2 times and this was before i ever used the web for purchases. I use the web all the time and have had no problems --even with paypal. There are many ways for crooks to get the number. Mark

Paypal may have a secure site just because they use https, but their security policies are not top of the line, as a consumer you get no protection from Paypal. During a conflict, chances are you will never recover any money from Paypal. For more information check http://www.paypalsucks.com
Some Rant and banter there, but some truth also.

Come with me. I'll take you places.

I did not read that there was any accusation against Fred personally.

In my 21 years experience as a prosecutor I can tell you I've seen more identity theft cases in the last two than in the preceding 19 combined. This is serious stuff.

There are many ways this information can be gleaned and, for all we know, there could be a weak link in the chain of communication to and from PayPal or even someone dishonest within PayPal.

Are you using Win2K or XP without a logon password?

If so you might have the taskmngr trojan which tries to gather information from your computer and send it off to a remote server. Do a search for taskmngr.exe on your boot drive.

You will find this program, it is not the trojan!

Read the warning at Symantec, Allen makes a legitimate point but task manager is a part of the operating system

Taskmgr.exe is a part of the operating system, but the taskmngr.exe mentioned in the previous post is not part of the OS. Many times these trojans have names that are very closely spelled like real OS components.

They don't even have to get "your" number - there's plenty of number generators available on the net.

The CC companies are trying to tighten security, but it takes time - for example, in the UK we have three extra digits printed on a CC on the signature strip. They are unconnected to the main number, so should make it much harder to use a number generator - however, I have only once so far been asked to quote those digits. Not all retailers are asking for them yet.

Certainly, I sympathize with your plight. Understand, however, that Fred Miranda is only a user of PayPal (like an eBay seller, for example). He has absolutely zero access to your credit card information. That's between you and PayPal. If it's a PayPal problem, so be it. I just don't want anybody thinking Fred Miranda or his company could have anything to do with this problem. Fred runs an honest business and sells only high-quality products. Just wanted to set the record straight here. Best to you and hope you problem is satisfactorily resolved.

While Fred was not accused directly, or even indirectly, the words may well cause the casual reader to think that doing business with Fred may cause problems with their credit card. Frankly, Fred's name should have never been hinted at, much less mentioned.

I don't think anyone in here has even began to put the blame on Fred.

But improving slowly.

Interesting part is that Norton AV won't catch it. It usually comes in as a self-extracting file, OCXDLL.EXE, which will unzip the following...

SECED.BAT
SCSETUP.SDB
TASKMNGR.EXE
DLL32.HLP
GATES.TXT
KILL.EXE
MDM.SCR
NCP.EXE
NT32.INI
PSEXEC.EXE
TFTP8675
XVPLL.HLP
DLL16.INI

TASKMNGR.EXE will come up on each startup to try to hook up with a dark server. Turns out that Microsoft knows about the breach and so does Symantec but they have no cure yet.

The Windows2000 &XP OS are the main targets. Especially if these machines are not logged in with passwords...which might be the case in home use.

Account information for banks and such are at risk.
