G3 - delay conspiracy theory

I recently went OS, and due to a friend having a camera, didn't buy a camera to take with me, also with the knowledge the G3 was supposedly to be released in October.

About 2 months later, I have returned, and noticed the G3 is still not released in most areas. The promised reviews have been delayed for weeks and weeks. It will soon be mid November.

What is going on? Where are the reviews and why are Canon requesting (and why on earth are reviewers complying?) samples to be pulled from websites?

I would naively have thought, after the G1 and G2, Canon would find it easy to whack out a new camera without bugs and have it straight to market - especially considering the pixel count has not changed and it is largely an upgrade as opposed to a totally new camera. However, the gloss of this camera is being lost on me, and every single day Canon persist delaying a 4MP upgrade camera means I consider the others even more, despite knowing it should be a good camera.

If people have purchased this camera and are now shooting pictures with it, where on earth are all the reviews? What is going on?! I can't be the only one frustrated at the delays in this cameras release. The typical marketing BS aimed at stopping you buying a competitors camera can only work so long. Or am I being cynical in thinking Canon drip-fed the public in order to stop them buying other models...

Please bring on the reviews - stop the anguish :)

I don't wish to speculate or contribute to a consiracy theory, but here is a fact I have observed in my travels to local retailers in search of a G3 (to play with and evaluate for now). Every retailer in my area (Vancouver, BC) has not received a G3 yet. One retailer (London Drugs) has a notice that the G3 has been delayed. Future shop are now not expecting them till the end of November. Most had previously said that they will have them in "early November"

....the G3 isn't as good as the G2. Phil and the other reviewers have discovered this. So......

They've delayed releasing the reviews so they can use the time to buy up all of the G2's being sold on eBay. Then they will release the G3 reviews. Everyone will see that it's not as good as the G2, and they will want the G2 instead. Phil and the other reviewers will then resell the horded G2's garnering a handsome profit. ;-)

I own the G2 so I'm not bashing Canon. I just don't see any real improvement in picture in the G3....matter of fact, I think the G2 pics are better but its' too early to tell from the few samples I've seen. I'm sorry but I'm not into going and buying the G3 simply because it is this years model. Next year is 2004 and they will come out with another camera and then another. The point is are you happy with the quality of pictures you are taking with whatever camera you are using? If yes, then why upgrade? I enjoy a new toy as much if not more than the next guy but it has to stop somewhere.
Just my thoughts. I don't see the great improvement in the G3 pictures

Now that is a good theory :-)

Not every new model is better, sometimes new models are cost reductions to improve profit margins which begin birth in Japan, once production is running smoothly, the tools and competences are transferred to China where it can be made even more cheaply and compete even better on price.

As I haved indicated here several times that last Sunday (November 3rd) I saw G3 in one of the Aden Cameras retail stores here in Toronto.

You may be right in the end. However, many people including me are buying the G3 for improved performance, features and controls. Huge difference - probably not but I never expected a huge improvement.

Another theory is that their primary goal is to dump their remaining G2s, before they release the G3 in quantity.

Yup, http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1022733611.html

"An interesting Reuters news article on the Yahoo! website reveals that Canon Inc. is planning to begin manufacturing digital cameras in China later this year or early in 2003 in an effort to cut costs."

The delay to get rid of the G2's is the best theory so far, IMHO. My G3, just delivered and charging, was made in Japan. I have a policy of not buying products made in China if it can be helped. If Canon moves there, I will not be buying in the future.

I agree about upgrading. In the computer world it is said only to upgrade if you can triple the performance of what you have unless you need it to run the latest and greatest piece of bloatware.

Same is true, IMO, of upgrading a G2. Picture quality does not appear better. But it is faster. And there are some other goodies like 4X zoom. The G1 would be a candidate for an upgrade but if it still gives you enjoyable photos and you enoy using it, then you should keep it.

You wouldn't believe it, but I'm upgrading to the G3 from an ancient Quicktake 200. I enjoyed it for many years but now the time has come for something new and grand that will allow me to create the photos I want. It's time for some serious photography and I will never go back to film after the taste of digital.

Keep the G2, maybe even past the G4 and enjoy!

Hi,
The basic theory of conspiracy:

G2 is still selling and there are lots of chassis out there. I noticed that is the last month with coincidence of photokina, lots of G2 have been putten on local stores.

Canon has convinced reviewers (namely dpreview.com) to delay G3 review 2-3 more weeks so that they can sell the G2 stock with the benefict that a G2 new owner will not complain for a G3 back order on the beginning of shipments.

Regards,
They've delayed releasing the reviews so they can use the time to
buy up all of the G2's being sold on eBay. Then they will release
the G3 reviews. Everyone will see that it's not as good as the G2,
and they will want the G2 instead. Phil and the other reviewers
will then resell the horded G2's garnering a handsome profit. ;-)

The G3 is not available in Japan until Nov.20th I believe, late in the month at any rate. I have been to some dozen retilers in Toko and Yokohama, the crowds were all around the Nikons. A point to note is that the G3 will sell at the same price as the G2, so I was told. Canon customer service was taken aback by my claim that the G3 was available in North America but not here. As to why, they had no idea, or shall I say they knew but could not say...... silence is a job here.

in German photo stores, the G2 currently sells partly for a higher price (800-890 EURO) than that of the G3 I pre-ordered online (815 EURO). They would have no chance to do that if the G3 is already out. Too bad that I must wait and wait for my G3 (until G2's price drops?) for this reason:(
