There seems to be a number of supposedly "new" S45s available on E-Bay but I don't know these sellers and can't decide to trust any of them. None of them (sellers) mention warranty so you could get stuck there. One seller, CAMWEIS, offers a 3 year extended warranty for an additional $60.

Has anyone had experience with these purchases? I hear so many stories about E-Bay swindles that I am leary to make a move as much as I want an S45.
Thanks for your responces.

I was considering to buy from ebay before I bought mine.

You need to calculate in import taxes appropriate for your country,
and bank remittance charges (e.g. in the UK they can be $35)
  • some sellers do not accept credit card.
But best to buy on credit card as you have an extra layer of protection.

Check if it comes with an English manual (some of the Japanese models do not), check the plug and voltage (I asked one buyer if it was standard UK plug it was not)

Sellers which have a batch of S45 on sale a better bet (more likely to be brand new and fresh stock) than the seller with only one (and slightly used).

There is usually no Canon warranty.

Cheapest I've seen one go for is £330

A rough average is around £390 ish I was watching every auction for about 2 weeks prior to buying mine!

Most of the stocks of S45 come from Hong Kong, so I emailed a dealer which I sourced from the internet and their price is as follows:

Thank you for the info Kwen. I was planning on buying a G3, but now I am considering buying an S45 from Hong Kong as well, but am concerned about the lack of warranty.

Does anyone know why Canon is not selling S45 in the us? Do they have a later release date for it, or are just not going to sell it here period?

If so, what is their plan for the S40 successor? Any rumors or info on this is apprcted.

I purchased an s45 from EDC Photo via the web. Seemed tio be very reputable (reseller ratings). Worked with me on price. http://www.edc-group.biz Communicated well. Always one step ahead with information. Camera shipped when promised, and arrived in 3 days. No import duties. Camera itself and manual are in English. If I need warranty work, camera must go back to them to send in to CanonHK.

Warranty from CanonHK was a special 15 months. I feel veery comfortable with my purchase.

Their price is quite high at US$628.00 where the E-Bay prices seem to be about $550.00. I sent them an email to see what kind of a deal they can give me and will decide based on their answer.
It is a shame that Canon forces us to go outside the US to get an S45.

Just got a reply from EDC. Price is $608.00 US plus $45.00 shipping and 14 month warranty. This is kind of high. Guess I'll have to look around some more.
Thanks again, Fred

They shipped mine free. If I know there is a Company out there for warranty help, I feel a lot better. I checked with a few guys on ebay, and found them very ambigious as to warranty and how to go about getting work done by Canon, at their expense. One even tried to sell me a warranty. If the guy on ebay is not an authorized dealer, I don't know what happens. Good luck.

I dchecked the EDC charge for shipping and it is $45.00 US. The warranty is very complicated as I would have to return the camera to them who will, in turn, send it to Canon Japan. Then it would be returned via the same route. I would have to pay shipping to Hong Kong but not the rest.
Not very appealing.

Fred,

I bought one off Ebay from Camweis. English manuals, the battery charger works in the US, etc. I did buy the third-party warranty, because even with the warranty it is cheaper than ordering it from another country.

So far I love the camera. :)

CanonUSA's official company line is"The S45 was designed for sale in the European market and will not be available for sale in the USA."

My GUESS is that, after they are done dumping their excess S40s on the US market, they will make the S45 available in the US.

After years on this site, I will be first to scream here if my purchase went awry. This is my first gray import. I bought my s45 outside of ebay from CAMWEIS also. It came with a xeroxed copy of the English manual but everything looks the same (I'm in the US). I also got a Mack warranty from him which you may obtain for less from someone else. The cost was 550 + 50 warranty + 29 3-day shipping. It actually arrived a day earlier.

I bought an extra battery for 49 somewhere else.

I got my s45 from camweis from ebay. So far so good. pretty happy with the camera. When I called them about the warranty, they told me it's from Ward, and basicly you have to sent it to a repair center somewhere in NY for repair, or to a canon shop. They have a lot pos on ebay. As far as I know, I am not the only one get this camera from them on this forum.
There seems to be a number of supposedly "new" S45s available on
E-Bay but I don't know these sellers and can't decide to trust any
of them. None of them (sellers) mention warranty so you could get
stuck there. One seller, CAMWEIS, offers a 3 year extended warranty
for an additional $60.
Has anyone had experience with these purchases? I hear so many
stories about E-Bay swindles that I am leary to make a move as much
as I want an S45.
Thanks for your responces.
Fred

Contacted CAMWEIS and bought one. Based on the experience of several posters I took a chance. Hope this works out OK.
Thanks for all the replys, Fred

If you want to import the camera directly from europe, you may try the french site NOMATICA ( http://www.nomatica.com ) or the german site New York Camera ( http://www.ny-camera.com ).

I have order equipment from both sites and the service was excellent on both. In Europe, many manufacturers and sites offer a two year warranty period and although the prices seem to high at first, if importing for usa or canada you will not be subject to VAT (19%).

As for accessories, including chargers and batteries, you can buy them locally, as they are the same as for S30/40.

Or you may want to wait a while because Canon will certainly realease the S45 in north america as soon as they sold the stock of S40. Where I live, s40 started to disappear from the shelves in July or august and s45 was launched last week.

Best regards

João Salvador
