I got to visit yesterday an area in northern Philippines (San Juan, La Union) where some folks were having fun with the waves.

I couldn't resist taking a few snaps - all with the 1D4 + 500 f4 + 1.4x, 475B/3421 support, manual exposure, EXIF intact. :)

Regards,

Nice shots Romy.
Thanks, Lynn!
A curiosity on of mine, how would your 400mm f/2.8 with a doubler compared in IQ and focusing speed?
My 400 2.8 + 2x TC has almost the same IQ as my 500 f/4 + 1.4x, but AF is slower and can hardly catch BIFs with busy BG. I didn't bring my 400 2.8 in this trip, but I think surfing is a bit easier than BIFs AF-wise. So I'm confident that a 400 2.8 + 2x can nail surfing shots, especially with a 1Dxx body.

Even my 7D can catch them wave riders. I mounted this body for longer shots and for video. :)

7D + 500 f4 IS + 1.4x TC, f/6.3, 1/1600 sec, ISO 400, manual exposure, 475B/3421 support

Thanks Romy,

I'm currently dreaming of getting the 400mm f/2.8 II with the new teleconverters.

My hope is that the new version of the 400mm f/2.8 with a doubler will match the 500mm f/4 +1.4.

I will have to wait till you try the new one (and get a lot of money) before I commit to that plan. Probably wishful thinking on my part. :-)

Nice shots Romy - BIF photographer slips easily into sports then - I bet the reverse wouldn't be the case - particularly small BIF !

Yes, BIF-shooting skills are very useable in shooting surf - both requires accurate AF and good exposure control. I think manual exposure is likewise the optimum approach to surf shooting because of the huge difference in brightness between the plain seawater surface/dark-skinned surfers and the white breaking waves.

The camera's exposure meter can be easily confused when using Av or Tv priority and the shooter isn't able to apply EC fast enough.

I'll tell you, next type load the printer, shoot jpeg and put them on display. You will make a killing. It will definately pay for the petrol. Nice shots

Nope. I shot in RAW and wasn't able to bring my PP computer. I was only able to process these after getting back to Manila (300 km drive). :)

I did that at my son's soccer tournaments and sold quite a few prints. 10x8 at €10 each ( action & team shots).

That's a great idea, especially when there's a surfing tournament. :)
Nice shots
Thanks!
