Sorry yet more snow shots :) with the GH2 got it a couple of days ago most taken when out with a walk with my dog today. Pretty happy so far good AF performance, like the built in EVF, metering seems accurate. Looking forward to giving it a real try out, when I get some free time been pretty busy not to mention snowed in oh well at least it gives me time to read the manual. The build quality seems a bit flimsy but perhaps just compared to my work cameras { D3s & D3x} I am another happy Mather's customer as it seems are most of the UK guys on the forum :)

Thank you Jim, You know i feel kind of thirsty when I don't see new images from the GH2 for awhile. And You came here now with your lovely shots and I am all right again.

I appreciate it. Please share more when you get them, until I get the camera for myself. ;-)

Hi Boris ,

I am hoping to get some time to give the camera a go over the next few days . The snow has been photogenic but it is a causing a bit of a disruption :) . I stay out in the country and thank goodness I have an old Land Rover or we would be stuck

Nice start Jim, you have some nice scenery in your neck of the woods, i'm surprised you feel the build quality is not so good, my GH2 feels well built and quite solid, the only thing thats iffy is the card door, i can hardly grab the card without bending it back, which is a bit worrying.

Hi Mark,

It is probably relative as I use the big FF Nikons for work and the lightness of the GH2 makes it feel less substantial. I also have the GF1 and the built in EVFof the GH2 is a major plus. I have not really dabbled too much with video but will be giving it a go; the 1:1 video mode seems interesting. What little video I have done has convinced me that whilst the camera is capable of great quality video, it is a whole different ballgame to still photography and editing is a royal pain in the backside :).

Hi Jim,

considering you are used to shoot with D3s/D3x, how do you find dynamic range and general IQ of the little GH2?

Thanks for sharing.

Jim,

Can you tell me what is the full model number listed on the box (there are usually a few letters after the "GH2" part) and is it the US version?

Thx

Hi Marco,

Well the D3s and D3x are about as good as it gets with regards to DR, noise performance and IQ and unfortunately priced accordingly :) . I am very happy with the performance of the GH2 though I have only just started with it. I find the camera responsive with good metering and WB, I will be using RAW as it gives better control. The EVF is surprisingly good {first one I have ever used} for manual focus and I will pick up a couple of adapters to use my other lenses on it. Apart from the bonus of being lighter and more compact the mFT cameras { I also have the GF1 } add a real fun factor back to photography and the carry everywhere ethos makes one far more likely to use the camera .

Hi,
It is the GH2H kit which Mathers UK split and sold as body only

Jim, my GH2 is DMC-GH2K and was from Mathers too, my kit was split from the 14-42, is that the same as yours mate, i'm worried now that my GH2 is maybe a grey import as its different from yours.

Hi Jim,

I consider adding a compact system or camera for portability and weight, the strenghts of the 4/3 system like movie mode and simply my interest in new technology.

How does the GH2 compare to D3 about:
  • DR (especially the possibilities to recover shadow detail and highlights in RAW)
  • AF
  • Native sharpness OOC
While computer history learned me that electronics are getting smalller and better in the same time I'm very interested to read rational findings about how GH2 compares to DSLR, and more specific to FX.

I was trying a GH1 with 14-140 and 45mm micro early this year but I returned the set because I was disappointed about AF(especially with the 45mm), about DR and native sharpness OOC. Taking the price of 4/3 in consideration I expected it to be much better about IQ than P&S cams. On the other hand I was extremely pleased about the ergonomics, compactness and weight, 14-140 lens, native colours and movie mode possibilities.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Jim,

I had and loved my D3 to death as far as IQ, especially with some ZF lenses.

I know it's very hard to compare anything with D3s (I recall when I tested one and shot some close-ups handheld at crazy ISO... perfectly clean and great color saturation!) or D3x (didn't have the luck to shoot with but I saw amazing acutance in many samples for all 24 Mp and wide DR at base ISOs). Full frame as we know is also great for shallow DOF and lenses usually behave better as far as there's good corner rendition.

Having said that I'm now addicted to m4/3, as it's far more portable than anything in APS-C or FF, mainly due to lenses rather than bodies.

I can carry my E-P2 complete with EVF, 9-18, 20, 14-42, 45-200 and a table tripod in a small Tamrac in which I couldn't fit my D3 with the ZF 35...

Portability is not all, otherwise we all shoot with P&Ss, but I think m4/3 as the potential to become a sweet spot, considering also all the legacy lenses you could mount on it... and you know photography is all about fun! :)

I've already ordered the GH2 and the 100-300, so I'll find for myself if the IQ is enough to not miss too much my beloved Nikons, but so far I'm positively impressed.

In the meantime I just found a nice used Pen-F 40 f/1.4 in France at a very good price... can't wait for it to arrive! :)

Ciao

Hi Gareth,

The weather up here has been pretty diabolical and I haven’t really had much of a chance to seriously compare the GF1 with the GH2 but I am hoping to do so tomorrow will take some shots using same lens and subject etc and see how it goes. So far I would say that the GH2 seems to outperform it at about everything apart from size. I had not bought the EVF for the GF1 and the built in one on the GH2 is a real bonus { and works very well for manual focus} as is the articulating screen a more than useful feature for video. Although the jpeg engine of the GH2 seems improved over the GF1 I think RAW is definitely the way to go
Cheers

And I thought I was the only one with the big Nikon guns to try a little m4/3 camera! I've wanted a G1 and every revision since. I finally bought the bullet with the GH2.

I have never held any G cameras as my local shop does not carry Pannys. Anyway I finally got to play with a G1 that I have sitting here waiting as a Xmas present for my daughter. I wanted her to have a full battery on Xmas morning so I charged the battery. Also took a little peak with the battery in to see how it feels. I was pretty amazed at the speed of the AF in my darkish basement. Not quite the speed of my Nikons, but pretty darn good. Can't wait to check out the GH2s AF tomorrow when it arrives here.

I'm guilty of not always having my camera with me, but of course the D3 Nikons and a lens are not exactly something you want with you all the time. I think something as small as the GH2 I'll just have almost all of the time.

Hi Don,

The fact that the cameras are so small is really quite liberating and does indeed encourage one to take it everywhere. I have been pleasantly surprised by the IQ and the AF is actually quite decent. In comparison to the Nikons they almost feel like toys but the end results and feature set are very good, I am looking forward to tinkering with video and the articulating screen and built in EVF are very useful for this.

I am curious to see the IQ vs. my D3S. I'll have to see if I have the time to do a side by side comparison. I know it will not match the D3S in hi ISO, but I am curious about all else up to ISO 1600. Let the games begin!

Actually I'm getting excited about this camera. I have gobs of Nikon cameras and lenses, not super expensive, but expensive enough like 24 and 85 1.4s. I already have a list of lenses I'd like for the GH2. I have the GH2 coming in with the 14-140 so I'd like to add the following. 8mm fisheye, 7-14, 9-18 Olympus (for when I want to use filters), 100-300, and finally the Nikon to m4/3 adapter for G series lenses. All that and it probably would weigh less than my D3S and one lens! I would think if I were not a pro I would think of selling my Nikon system. Having a great FF system is awesome but I'm not going to shoot great photos if I left it home because it weighs too much to just carry around.
