My new S40 has very unreliable focusing. I noticed it immediately when I opened the box yesterday. Both last PM inside in both light and darker rooms and this AM on the landscape setting outdoors, which is supposed to be automatically set on infinity, it was badly out of focus. Is this a common problem, or am I doing something wrong? I have it on the highest resolutioin and least compression, yet the pix are just disappointing. This cameras has high reviews and I got it largely on that basis. I also really do not like the download program, either. It doesn't automatically work on Win XP, so I am down to using a CF reader and

PSP-7. Not what I had in mind. Anyone else have this experience? Do I need to return it while I can? Thanks for any input.

I am sure your camera must work with win xp. plug it in to the USB and then look under "My Computer'. is it not there? my s230 works great under win xp. I don't see how you could use the canon software if win xp does not see your device.

John,

PSP7: Takes a little getting used to. I also have Elements 2.0 which I like a little better but it's not as powerful as PSP. I rarely use either...but you do need to keep one of them.

BreezeBrowser offers 90% of what I need and is a simple and powerful tool allowing you to shoot raw. I suppose if you choose to shoot JPEG (which most probably do), you'll need something else. Shooting JPEG gives you processed pics right out of the camera that shouldn't be too far off. Raw lets you capture what the camera saw completely unprocessed (the digital negative, if you will) and then let's you set your white balance, sharpening, contrast, etc. on your PC. The cruise gallery you commented on - I had gone through that a few times tweaking the photos and everytime I was happier as I learned how to use sharpening and levels.

I always use a card reader. More convenient for me and don't need to work the batteries in the camera. Post a sample picture if you can. BTW, the focus issue is common on the S40 - I always click MF and verify the distance to subject before shooting (or use manual focus). You can also use Av mode and set the aperature down to 5 to 7 range (light permitting) and increase your depth of field. Hope that helps.

Greg: thanks for the reply. I'll try the aperature setting for awhile. I guess I can always send it back to Canon if the focus seems to be out of tolerance, but I'll try it for a week or so first. Does seem to be a high quality piece of work. I'll get some pix on here if it keeps up. JOHN

I have had a similar experience with my S40 - focused pics are hit and miss. After 3 months I have given up and sent it in to Canon for repair. Meantime I have learnt a lot trying to get good pics - thinking it was me that was at fault not the camera.

Personally I would take a week or two to check it out and read all the posts in here about getting better focus. I would also take a LOT of pics - including raw pics - to see how they turn out. I wouldn't waste time sending it back if you are in any doubt after your tests.

I use XP for my camera and if you look in the control panel you should see it there after installation, make sure it is plugged in tho. I have a shortcut on my desktop for the camera and use that to download the images - canon software kepts getting corrupt databases.

Good Luck - it is a great camera, and photo's I have seen on the net from it are excellent!

Thanks, Jadzia, I am puzzled by the XP thing. I get the double chimes when I plug it in, just like my Minolta, but no pix come up. I'll keep fooling with it. I am reassured by the posts I got back and I do note that the flasing no-focus light comes on a lot and if I avoid taking a pix then, the mostly DO come out right. Still doesn't explain the fuzzy pix when set on landscape, tho, as that is supposed to make the camera go to an infinity focus. Appreciate the comments. JOHN

I think I gave u a bum steer - I have the icon for the camera in "My Computer" and click on it to open a folder that has the images in it. XP also has a wizard that will run you through downloading images. As I dont' have my camera at present I can't do a dummy run to tell you exactly.

It sounds like your camera might also have a problem - have you tried the AV and TV settings at all? You could try the manual focus in infinity and see how they turn out then. I hummed and ha'ad over mine for too long and wish I had sent it in earlier - the only thing now is wether they can repair it or will replace it - with the S45!
