GH2, its here!

Its like night and day, the GH2 is blindingly fast, thought the G2 was quick but the GH2 is so much faster, i cant measure it but just believe me.

Mark.
Thanks for the initial impressions - have you had much of a chance to compare the autofocus speed to the G2? Is it noticeably faster?

Thanks,
J

My battery is on its second charge, so i cant check it yet.

Has anyone noticed yet, that the AF assist lamp has been revamped, and it's now strong enough to melt your face off?

The pattern has changed a load too, compared the the GH1's small circle. This think now projects a much brighter center square, which seems to blast a halo out too around the centre.

Oh and if you look at it, it'll take a while for your vision to come back :)...you've been warned.

Is the banding the horizontal lines that go through the mouth and eye of the deer? If so, it's in all the photos.
OK, Help me out as a novice who just received a GH1 yesterday....what is banding and where is it in the first (GH1) picture.

I'm still in learning mode for camera and photography both!

Thank!
Andy.

No, they are advent calendars and the lines are the little windows that will open to reveal (chocolate generally in the UK!), but they could be authentic calendars with no chocolate and a seasonal picture behind instead?

Get a solar charger and shine the AF lamp at it. It'll be done in about 5 minutes flat :)

Thanks, my eyes are sensitive and I need to watch people using flashlights around,
Can you turn it (AF assist lamp) out for good?

Yes, can be turned off.

Thanks for the earlier answer Mark.

How many images did you get out of your 1st charge?

IIRC my ex GH1's battery was 1250 ma., so 50 ma. less should be no big deal,
but I never found that the batteries lasted very long before needing a charge
(maybe it was my way of using the camera?).

Last year I didn't want to carry my heavy DSLR on a trip to Indo-China and so I bought a GH1 (I no longer have it) and at the end of next month I'm off to Africa, so I'm considering the GH2 for this trip but if the battery life is worse than my GH1 I really don't want to have to buy more than 1 (expensive!) spare battery.

Thanks for these Mark, the iso800 looks clean with noise just starting to show in the iso1600 one. The iso3200 shots noise doesn't look too bad ether.

I know your being bombarded with questions but have you've noticed the ISO setting on the GH2 not understating as much as the GH1 (or G2 I think)? Are the shots darker on the GH2 compared with the G2 when using the same exposure settings?

I'll check that with my G2 later today for you, so you want me to set ISO and exposure the same under the same lighting and see if the GH2 has a darker output, is that right.

Mark.

Yep, that's it exactly Mark, thanks again. Forgot to mention I couldn't find any pattern noise in you shots, looking good.

Mark, have you given any thought to finding a "host" site where you can upload the originals to? It would be a great time to do it as you just got the GH2. That way other folks could d/l the originals and play with them. I believe there are a few free ones out there that are good and maybe someone can chime in with a good one. The small images that are here don't show much and I believe that you have done some PP on most of them also....

Just a thought, i'm sure you have been a real help to alot of people in their decision making process so far.

THe few shots i have post so far are all full sized OOC jpg, you just need to click the original link to see them.

If someone wants to host a few shots ( jpg ) i can email them one at a time, let me know the email and i'll send them.

Do you see banding?
There's some noise in all three (look at the background in the 800 and 1600 pics, and all over in the 3200 pic) but it's handled very well. Looks like a winner!

I hope this gives you the answer your looking for, not sure what this test demonstrates TBH.

Same lens used, same settings.

G2 ISO 400 1/15 F4.7

GH2 ISO 400 1/15 F4.7

The image from G2 is good, very good, but the things on the one by GH2 are just palpable!
So, it's not the lens that made them look 3-dimensional.

Looks to me like the GH2 is a little darker than the G2, maybe by a half a stop or more.

It confirms (to me) what I've read about the GH2's ISO rating being more inline with the competition.

This will help the GH2 in competition compairisons, since the ISO rating are closer.

The down side is that when comparing noise with other G/H's a setting on the GH2 would be close to an equivalent setting of the GH2 minus a half a stop or so on the other G's. So if the GH2 looks a stop better than the GH1, in reality it would be more like a half a stop (or a little less) better.

Of course there's the no banding (that I've seen) on the GH2 which looks like a big improvement.

Thanks Mark, this will teach ya for getting things first!!!
