GH2, its here!

1600/3200 look really good. The grain is very fine, and hard to see without zooming in. They've done some significant improvement on the sensor. Mine is on preorder with Panasonic Direct.

Wow! I might actually stop shooting RAW now. Those jpgs look just fine. Note that this also makes the small aperture zoom lenses useful indoors now. A shutter speed of 1/400 of a second is not bad for indoors. With and steady hand and the IS it should be acceptable even at 600mm equivalent as well.

We have a winner I believe.

I'm finding the default settings are noise/smear central at ISO 3200/6400 unless Intelligent Resolution and Exposure are whacked up. Again, it's crude testing, so I could be doing things wrong, but they are 'very' different cameras.

I've just compared OOC from both GH1 and GH2, jpegs, ISO 3200, all default settings, with standard film. The difference is vast, with the GH1 looking very detailed and fine....apart from quite obvious banding. The GH2 standard OOC is noised and smeared very badly. The difference is so huge, it's making me think that the GH1 was doing IR, but you didn't have the choice to turn it off.

100% crops

GH1 14mm ISO 3200 1/10 f4.0

GH2 14mm ISO 3200 1/10 f4.0

GH2 14mm ISO 3200 1/10 f4.0 + Intelligent Resolution/Exposure (I'm not convinced my hand holding at 1/10 is making this look a touch softer btw)

GH2 14mm ISO 6400 1/20 f4.0

GH2 14mm ISO 6400 1/20 f4.0 + Intelligent Resolution/Exposure

So, I'm not entirely sure of what to make of it all, but I'm pleased with the high ISO images with IR applied, but if it wasn't for the banding, I'd be very pleased with the GH1 shots too.

More testing required.

Besides the problem in question (I would use a tripod!), the colors of GH2 jpeg look so much more natural and pleasing!

OK, Help me out as a novice who just received a GH1 yesterday....what is banding and where is it in the first (GH1) picture.

I'm still in learning mode for camera and photography both!

Thank!
Andy.

I don't even know if the camera works yet, anyone know how long the battery is going to take, its bloody hot to touch, that worrying me, my normal G2 batts don't get this hot.

Mine's been charging for over 90 mins, only very slightly slightly warm at the moment
Finished charging, my battery never got hot, only very very very slightly warm

I'm getting good shots w my D7000.

But it IS bigger, heavier, and of course it can't really AF during video (it tries but struggles).

Sounds like you made the smarter choice - good for you! ;-)

I basically uploaded directly to Flickr from the memory card, and then pixel peeped in the browser, and took 100% crops from the browser. I'm now looking at them 1:1 in Lightroom and it it's a different story. Can't really explain why, but I'm happy enough with it.

Comparing the GH1 and GH2 at ISO 3200, the GH2 is edging it. I think it tougher -EV scenarios with lower detail, that's where we'll see it clearly winning.

ISO 6400 on GH2 still looked a bit smeary though at 1:1. But better than I expected and certainly usable for smaller images.

Just got back from an outing with the GH2 and here is the first shot.

Film mode is dynamic but everything else is set to default settings.

Full sized jpg, slight sharpening and levels.

Hi,

Congrats to your new camera!

Can you post some portraits please? I'd be interested to see how the skintones come out without any or not much postprocessing.

Much appreciated!

Hi Mark1000,

Whits lenses came whit the body ??????
The official kits sold by Panasonic UK contain the camera body and either of:
  • 14-42mm zoom lens
  • 14-140mm zoom lens
If Panasonic want GH1 users to upgrade to the GH2 you would think that they would also offer a body only option. Instead here in the UK it is normally up to those retailers with a high volume of sales to split the official kits into component parts. Arguably the UK retailer with the largest m43 camera turnover is Mathers of Lancashire. They started out taking body only orders and trying to sell the 14-42mm and 14-140mm lenses individually, but appear to have now stopped doing this.

The situation for Panasonics Nederland may be very different

I don't even know if the camera works yet, anyone know how long the battery is going to take, its bloody hot to touch, that worrying me, my normal G2 batts don't get this hot.
If you RTFM (Read the fine manual), the information on page 25 suggests that a complete charge from flat (the shipping status) will take 140 minutes. Mine has been on for 105 minutes so far and that pesky green light is still on. :-(

After this time it is still cool to the touch, so perhaps your central heating is turned up too high? :-)

First i must say that this clip is stunning on my 52 inch bravia, its super smooth and very high quality, but the youtube UL looks, well, cack, i'll post it anyway, but this doesn't represent what i have just watched on my TV, where and how can i post the uncompressed video.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback, but the " chosen one " is a responsibility to far :-)

Has anyone noticed yet, that the AF assist lamp has been revamped, and it's now strong enough to melt your face off?

The pattern has changed a load too, compared the the GH1's small circle. This think now projects a much brighter center square, which seems to blast a halo out too around the centre.

Oh and if you look at it, it'll take a while for your vision to come back :)...you've been warned.

On vimeo, you can upload the raw mts, but with a free account your limited to 1 hd clip per week. But we can download from there, alternatively, just upload to dropbix or something similar.

Thanks for the initial impressions - have you had much of a chance to compare the autofocus speed to the G2? Is it noticeably faster?

Thanks,
J

Thanks, my eyes are sensitive and I need to watch people using flashlights around,
Can you turn it (AF assist lamp) out for good?
