From a recent visit to NYC over Thanksgiving - here's a shot from the original Macy's Department Store on 34th St. There's been a tad of pp in iPhoto...

Nice enough. . . you might want to adjust the white balance in post too (if you can't set it accordingly for the shot). The mixed lighting doesn't make it easy, granted:

--Better now Bob has had a go at it dont you think Cleve. I think the fellow in the foreground looks like the fonz in the happy days :)

Thanks so much Bob! I used iPhoto, but I really don't understand the WB type adjustments yet... I really like what you did with the coloring in your rendition! There's always more to learn!

Yes he sure does Lee (the Fonz, and Bob too). I liked Bob's rendition because of the skin color being more natural. The people in this shot were clearly transfixed by all the glitter and dazzle of this place... a bit like Times Square indoors...

Thanks Jack - in this case it wasn't necessarily intentional - I have a ways to go in learning how to deal with light sources and adjustments in PP. I'm using iPhotos right now but am considering transition to Aperture 3.

There was a lot more glittery pizazz behind me - I think these people were entranced by this setting...

That one is good too Bob but the scene is lit with colored lights and I think the original tells the story better.
Of course. Observers may disagree, but if that was the photographer's intention then it's spot on. ;)

When you call up Edit and the adjustments tool, there's a WB button you can click on, and then use the mouse to click on white or gray areas in the image. I believe it was the box on the right shelf that gave me the resulting WB - the usual or obvious choices (white shirts, seemingly other colors that should be gray) didn't return a pleasing WB setting. But it hurts nothing to experiment.

Don't be intimidated to play with the Tint and Hue sliders in the WB adjustment manually. The sooner you do, the sooner you'll find it useful from time to time (but most of the time the eyedropper will be sufficient).

In the field, knowing much of the lighting is incandescent (or assuming so), changing the WB setting in the camera to Incandescent would have been another way to take WB into account. Either way, as long as it's fun. ;)

Macy's does a lot better decorating in their NYC store than the in the one in Portland, which is quite minimal.

Yeah I noticed that when browsing through the local Macy's... the contrast between 34th St NYC and here in terms of decoration was stark...
