This should really be posted in the General forum or beginners questions, but here's the short answer.

PP stands for Post-Processing (some call it "post" as well)

It usually incorporates a raw file converter that can work with levels and curves, an image editor, as well as a few aftermarket plug-ins.

It's all personal taste, but some of the big ones are:

Raw converters:
Lightroom, Aperture, Capture NX2 (only on Nikons)

Image editors:
Photoshop
Gimp

Plug-ins:
Noise Ninja, Topaz Labs "DeNoise", Topaz Labs "Detail", and Photomatix (for HDR)

Look around and find out what you like. Most of these have fully functional trials for 30-60 days. They simply cost too much to buy ones that you don't like/need.

Hope this helps. Cheers,

Nathan
I have seen some people posting things such as boost the sharpness in PP. I don't understand what PP is. It is not Photoshop right since that will be PS.

SW like PS, PS3, ACR, CNX2 or the like used to enhance SOOC shots into ART. They can be HDR or increase the DR. As the OP, please dont be PO-ed at my OT rant.

It's either:
  • The "cheat" of those who could never manage to get the exposure and composition "right" in-camera
or
  • The ability to maximize the optimum capture to realize your artistic vision
Post-processing is a little bit of both of these, actually, though from my perspective, it's primarily mostly the 2nd point above. It lets me take a shot like this:

and turn it into my vision like this:

This is where I wait for an OOC JPG example that looks like that. ;)

Oh, yeah: OOC means "Out of Camera"

It's easy to argue about equipment and technique, but hard to argue with a good photograph -- and more difficult to capture one .

Everyone's vision is different. I personally think the original shot OOC is good enough to not need any PP. It's like every artform though where people can tweak to their own individual preferences and tastes and decided for themselves whether less is more or more is less and suchlike.
