Family Portrait

I do hope that the comments are deeply ironic.

All comments are purely personal and generally based on my experience.
What I state is an opinion; I may well be wrong.

I feel that the grouping and posing are a bit awkward. For instance, the girl on the left feels cut off from the group. This is accentuated by the fact that the fill lighting is uneven across the fram, with steep falloff to the left.

The processing seems off a tad, due to an apparent lack of contrast and perhaps a poor use of the shadow-highlight tool or something else that mucks with midtone contrast. The framing and background are also a little suboptimal IMHO.

OTOH I think the family is very photogenic. :) I am astounded at the lack of basic decency shown by another poster.

Nice photo!

I find this family portrait extremely static and lacking the kind of dynamism and movement that should at least illustrate the joy of being together. Everybody is sitting upright or standing up straight. Much too conventional IMO, to the verge of being cheesy. Why keep the father in the middle and make him look like god himself with the fire burning in his back. Moreover, his tall stature reinforces this quasi divine "omnipotentia" and brings up the apparent dependency of a charming wife quietly sitting by his side. A very traditional family indeed.

Glad you enjoy it as it makes wonderful memories a Season's greetings!

i just love how many people here are group shot experts.

those who shoot groups know that it isn't easy to pull off award winning photos.

i say as long as the client likes them, which im sure is the case with this one. that's all that matters.

Very nice shot. I've been having problems with focus on group portrait type shots. When the people are at different levels from the camera, where do you focus to get everyone in sharp focus? What focus mode do you use?

Thanks

Albert, I visited your site and you have excellent shots. I love your different group shots keep up the good work. Do not harp on the negative remaks of some readers , often times it is just a reflection of their own inadequacies and delusional personalities.

After all it is vastly easier to verbally judge and down grade someone else's work without showing an example of their perfect images.

I believe you have it right, as long as the client is happy with the product you are one the right track.

Well maybe but I think it's also damn rude of the OP to just stick his picture up with no text saying what he's after.

It is just a bog-standard pose and result after all but if he's asking for C&C he should say so. As it is, it seems he just wants us to admire his family.

I for one will never comment on pictures of the photographer's family because there is too much personal attachment and comments/critiques can be taken as personal attacks on the family.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder or parent/grandparent and I often see pictures of quite ugly children where the parent/grandparent-photographer is expecting everyone to see the child through his/hers (understandably), rose tinted spectacles.

Very well done....but I would not post a photo of my family on the web.

Why not Peter? You see families everywhere, not just the web. THE FAMILY is the fabric of society. I see this family has much love to share!

I agree! Why the hell not? Whats the big deal about posting a pic of your family?

Some people are so paranoid!

My 2 cents. good lighting.
I feel there is too much distance, the family should be close together.

light is warm, all family members look good , setting is nice..

and the sticks up their butts that keep them as upright and as rigid as the nut cracker on the left...... doesn't show..

really....does this whole family all have arthritis so they can't move their joints??

maybe a bit of leaning in to each other, a little life, a little sincerity of affect??

i assume that because you posted it you were asking for C and C..

if you weren't, ignore the beginning of this post. and go with......".Very nice family photo"
