Thank you Joe :)

Only 20 people per day are allowed to visit North Coyote Buttes.

10 are via an internet lottery and the other 10 are handed out to people who visit the BLM Office on US89 or Kanab from late November onwards.

But a lot of people arrive at the Office and a lottery usually takes place to determine who will be given a permit from the following day.

Yes you can join me, but you'll need to get a permit too.

The rules have recently been changed, so that people who were unlucky in getting a permit, can't reapply for one over multiple days until they finally get a permit.
I think you can now reapply once or maybe twice in a given period of time.
Top shelf work, especially that stunning B&W. Also, my initial reaction to #2 was a feeling of hovering over Jupiter - good cropping choice to leave out extraneous border elements.

And what is a 'walk-in lottery'?
A three time winner you say? Can I join you next time you 'walk in'?

Hi,
Can some one tell me where this place is located, state? nearest city? etc.
Is there a web link to find our more?
Looks very beautiful and really I never heard of this place.

thanks.

Oh man, great shots, particularly the non traditional shots of patterns.

I was ready to do the Wave this September. Lottery won permit in hand. Perfect day, I mean, flawless. Problem was that House Rock Valley road was completely tore up from the floods earlier, and there was no way to make it down the road in a passenger car that day. I was so bummed. In retrospect, I should have just hiked the damned 8 (+3) miles in and then back - woulda been totally spent, but probably would have been worth it.

Going to try again next year - any suggestions for the best time of year?
I don't mind hot weather...

White Pocket looks amazing too...

The Wave (and the Coyote Buttes area, there is a North and South section - the South far more difficult to get to - requires 4WD absolutely) is located on RT 89 close to midway between Kanab, UT and Page, AZ.

Right around milepost 25 and 26, IIRC, where House Rock Valley Road turns off. It's a sneaky road - hard to see from the highway. HRV Road is dirt and can get rough, gotta check with the rangers for road condition. 8 miles down the dirt road to the Wire Pass trailhead, and then a 3+ mile open hike to the Wave. You need a permit for either North or South Coyote Buttes - North is where the Wave is. The OP can give more details I'm sure.

This is so fantastic. Great photos. I was in Kanab in October but did'nt know where Coyote Butte was. It rained for a week. So dirt roads were questionable. Love this area and have to come back again and again. Thanks for posting the great photographs. Well with the lottery being close does not maybe mean so much, but I sure would like to see this close up and personal. LOL

"The Wave" itself is located in Arizona, but the hike to it starts in Utah.

To reach the trail head you need to drive South on "House Rock Valley Road" for about 9 miles approx, the road is approximately located mid point between Kanab, Utah and Page, Arizona.

You need a permit from the BLM Office on US89, which is just a few miles East of House Rock Valley Road.
Here's a website about the permit details.
http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/arolrsmain/paria/coyote_buttes/permits.html

US89 is a goldmine for taking photos, Old Pariah Townsite, Toadstools, Yellow Rock, Cottonwood Road the list goes on.
Take a look at my Utah galleries if you've time to see more.

Thank you.

The first time I went for July 1st and it was blazing hot.
So I'd say any time apart from the Summer.

Maybe early in the year might be good, if you could visit after it rained, the rocks would be look different and be more saturated and they'd be large pockets of water.

They were large pockets of water when I visited in October this year, but not when I visited in Oct. 2 years ago.

White Pocket was amazing, but it was a very cloudy day when I visited, I had about 5 mins worth of Sunshine.
I will return one day.

No permit is needed for White Pocket, but you'll need a high clearance 4x4 vehicle.
A rental SUV will get stuck.
I'd recommend hiring an Outfitter to get you there.

Thank you :)

I was in Kanab on the 18th Oct. and it hailed and hailed.
And I did The Wave trip on the 19th.
The next few days were cloudy from memory, when I was in Page.

I went to South Coyote Buttes and White Pocket on the 22nd, and it was cloudy and dull 99% of the day. At least it didn't rain.

Those are great shots. Excellent composition. You, sir, have some talent. These inspire me.

I submitted for the online lottery this year, but unfortunately was not chosen. I'll try again next year.

Random question, where did you stay? I usually camp at these type of places but was unable to find anything remotely close.

Thank you very much, you are very kind to say so.
But you speak the truth ;) :D

I stayed at a motel in Kanab before my visit to The Wave.

The only places I can think of that might be suitable for you, would be the parking lot for the "toadstools" about 1 mile East of the BLM Office on US89 or maybe the parking lot/road to Paria Movieset, about 12 miles West of the BLM Office.

Are those waves left over from the flood caused by the enormous glacial lake that let go after the last ice age? They say that lake covered 100's of thousands of acres and let loose one day, ripping across the western U.S. like a huge wall of water. Every time I fly over the western U.S. I look for traces of that great flood...

Great pictures and how lucky you are! Thanks for sharing!

When your current system does not satisfy you, it is better to switch than to cry and whine on the forums.

I don't think the erosion was caused by a glacial lake.
I think it's more localised wind and water erosion.
