Did anyone try this lens on a Sony Alfa (a55 to be exact) somewhere in the world. Is it really available at all or is it just a big hoax.

I've ordered one three weeks ago (was due to arrive around 20/11/2010) but upon asking where is was was told by the Tamron importer (in the Netherlands) that it will be delayed until mid January next year. I find it difficult to believe there won't be any further delays.

Alternatives or should I wait for two more months and hope they will not find any new delays?

I hate it when companies lie to me! How hard is to put an honest due date on websites

Or maybe you could take the perspective of the manufacturer and think how easy it would be for a single thing to go wrong and cause setbacks with losses resulting. It's not as though any manufacturer would want to delay if they don't absolutely have to.

I fully agree, but why not inform your customers honestly and upfront when that happens? I simply get frustrated by not being informed (after they take my money).

Perhaps it happened after your purchase was made? I truly have no idea. You would think it would be simple enough to just send an email out to all online buyers or something along that line. However. At least it is a quality product you're ordering so that's some good news there.

Well, the $50 rebate is only good through 12/31/2010, so if they release it in mid-January 2011 how exactly will that work?

I have bee eagerly awaiting the release of this lens to get some 1st impressions before pulling the trigger...

Yes, it would be nice if they'd at least extend the rebate if the lens is late. But I'm not counting on it...

It might make sense to order it before 12/31 then...

Did you order directly from Tamron? Just curious..

No; I ordered in my local photo shop 3-4 weeks ago after I (and the shop) got the confirmation from Tamron that the lens would be available right about now. When I heard nothing I started making inquiries to be told it will be delayed by two months. In my book that't called lying. I can't really blame they shop; they relied on the same info I got.

Although the shop is indeed not responsible, he cannot blame you for doing this.

Maybe Sony/Tamron have backtracked on their stance and have decided to enable VC on the lens. That would account for delays. Dreaming I know but I can wish.

Well, they promised it would arrive this week a couple of months ago. They reconfirmed this two weeks ago and guess what? Sure enough, without any warning, our Japanese friends have delayed it another month (so they say).

The frustrating part is that there is no real alternative (maybe the Sony 70-300 G SSM at almost double the price of the Tamron?).

I made it clear to them that I do not like being lied to; I consider all the above a clear case of lying. I will give Tamron the following challenge: I will accept the further delay under the condition that Tamron will provide me with a Sony 70-300 G SSM if they miss their third promise. I wonder if they will accept the condition. If they don't you can bet it will be delayed until March or even later.....

Why is it so difficult to simply and honestly inform paying customers?

Once these lenses arrive with shiploads, you can order it anywhere you want ! There is only one way to make your point: cancel the order. At least you can do something else with the money if neccesary.

Maybe Tamron has learned from Sigma's mistakes and doesn't want to risk a mass upgrading program on their new lens. Clearly the SLT platform presents some challenges for A-mount lenses, as evidenced by Sigma's issues, so Tamron may be paying extra attention to this. Better for all of us in the end.

Sorry for your frustration.

Sony A55, A580, HDR-SR12, T100

Lenses: SAL70400G, Sigma18-250 OS HSM, Sigma 18-50 OS HSM, Maxxum 50mm 1.7, Lensbaby Composer

Maybe Tamron will activate VC after all. They just found out removing or deactivate VC is more complicated than they thought at first, and also they need time to workout SLT compatibility. Wishful thinking I know, but if that's case I will buy one of those even I just got 70-400G.

OK, if that's the case all I'm asking for is some honest and upfront information. Tamron (my shop) took my money 3 months ago and are not able to give good info.

I suspect some misplaced confidentiality stuff; looking at the (Dutch) Tamron site all seems well and there is no indication at all that the Sony mount version of this lens is not available. Worse: the importer gave me two prognosed due dates (I guess based on info from Japan) which were not kept. Their newest date (do I have to believe it this time) is mid February. Digging a little deeper I noted that on the English part of the website Tamron does state a date is unknown; why didn't someone tell me this upfront? Why do I get the wrong info? Tamron, wake up; I am a paying customer!

Where did you find the information on a Tamron site that claims that the lens is already available for Sony?

I looked at the Tamron.eu site where it says (in german):

"Aktuell ist das Objektiv noch nicht für Sony verfügbar. Einschränkungen zu bestimmten Modellen sind daher nicht bekannt. [ quote]

(as being Dutch you surely understand that is says that it is unknown when shops can have the lens in stock)

On the Tamron.com site there is no information, but for more information you must click to be forwarded to the tamron.co.jp site where the following is visable:
Launch date: For Sony ; To be determined [\quote]

I never pay in advance for items for which it is nog sure when they are in stock.
For example: I'm glad I didn't order a White iPhone 4G...

At which shop did you order it? Just ask them your money back.

Being Dutch I looked on the Dutch Tamron site; there is no indication at all that the Sony mount is not available. You're right about the German site; it is like the English site. I never looked there until this week.

Here is the link I looked at: http://www.tamron.com/nl/photolens/di_telephoto/a005.html . It does state the Sony will not have VC but says nothing about availability but merely confirms a Nikon, Canon and Sony mount are available.

Since Tamron has a dedicated Dutch site I never looked any further; should I have to?. I did contact the Dutch importer a number of times; they confirmed delivery dates three times now (the latest they tell me is mid feb).

I would cancel the order and re-place it when it is in stock somewhere.

You're right about the global site (it's the same information in all the languages). Only when you click to see more productinfo you're able to see that the lens is not yet in stock for Sony.

The distributer should have known this i.m.o.
