Hi - I am going to be using the camera mostly for family photos and vacations. Am looking for something quicker and better quality than my point and shoot, but honestly can't see myself lugging around a DSLR. I love the idea that the LX5 is fast and has a nice Leica lens and that I can play with the manual modes, but I heard the jpegs aren't great. Would they still be better than my Oly Stylus 770SW? I mean, would a layperson think the jpegs look fine or is it really noticeable in a 5x7 printed photo?

I mostly use iphoto and create family photos for our wall and an annual photobook (nothing much bigger than 8 x 10 very often). I believe I can shoot RAW and that iphoto would accept those and I could use the iphoto processing to get jpegs. Would this solution give me better images than the cameras jpeg setting? Would this be better quality than a compact point and shoot? Someday I may get into photoshop again, but right now I'm too busy.

I love my Olympus Stylus 770SW for the fact that I can take it to the beach, throw it in my dive bag, use it snorkeling and otherwise abuse it and not worry about it, but its processing time (or shutter lag or flash synch or whatever it is) is slow and it is difficult to catch "the moment" with my quick moving kids and in low light (indoors) the photos are miserable. I'm experimenting with the different settings and having some success, but not what I'd like to see.

Will the LX5 be a significant enough improvement to warrant the $400? or is it overkill for me and I should look for another compact point and shoot for about half the price? My Oly is old as far as cameras go - I think at least 5 yrs (it is 7.1 mega pixel)

All opinions are welcome.

Forgot to add that I used to really enjoy photography - that was a long time ago so I'd be learning again, but that is also why the LX5 seemed appealing.

I normaly shoot a 1DSIII, but I carry an LX5 on my belt for quickie shots and causal outings. The IA (auto mode) does a wonderful job with jpgs, and thats how I use it. I don't understand the complainers. Maybe their monitors are not calibrated. It's NOT a DSLR, but it is a wonderful camera, and can be used in other modes.

I dont own the camera, but I ve done a lot of research on it and waiting for a good deal.

Yes the JPEG is not the best compared to the other cameras of its class but a casual user that wont pixel peep will probably find it great. The problem is that the default settings use a bit too much noise reduction. If you decrease the NR to -2 in camera settings and dont shoot over ISO 400 (you can set an automatic mode that the camera never choses over a specific ISO) the quality is very nice.

If you are going to shoot above iso 800 which wont happen a lot then you might need to learn about RAW processing :D In general with a fast lens like that and the amazing image stabilization you wont need high ISOs often!!!

Good luck with your choice.

I own an LX3 and bought the LX5 as soon as it came out. I have been taking photos for 45 years and owned much equipment along the way, but am now down to the two LXs and a DSLR which hasn't had much use since I first bought the LX3.

I find the jpgs from both of the LXs fine for my purposes which are family, holidays, scenics, casual etc. I really don't know what the complaining is all about. I think it's just the old "you can't please everybody".

Excellent camera and good jpgs. My fridge is covered by actual 8x10 prints (as opposed to images on a computer monitor) and I'm happy with them.

Thank you so much everyone for taking the time to answer me- glad to hear people are happy with the LX5, now if I can find a good Black Friday or Cyber Monday sale I'm in business!

Panasonic still hasn't figured out how to get accurate, pleasing jpeg colors - especially flesh tones. DP Review notes this, Thom Hogan does, and so does Imaging Resource. I shoot RAW and am happy with my LX3, LX5, and GF-1, but I wouldn't own any of them if they didn't shoot RAW. If you want pleasing jpegs straight out of the camera, I'd get a Canon S95 compact or Olympus EP1 micro 4/3 camera.

Well, I found a good price and bought one - I'll experiment with RAW and jpeg - I can shoot either...

any recommendations on which memory card to get (fastest) and how much memory I'll need to shoot RAW with this camera? My current camera has an 8 gig card and I haven't filled it up even on vacation, but it doesn't shoot RAW and I think I'll take more photos with this one then I have with the other...

I went for an Sandisk 8GB Extreme HD and completely satisfied with it.

I've found 8GB, more than enough space for at least a day's use in RAW and/or jpeg (RAW images are about 10MB, jpeg about 4Gb) and several HD video clips without being as pricey as higher spec and/or larger capacity.

You made a great choice. I've often viewed your photos (replied some times) and IMO this is the perfect camera for you!

You made a great choice - I love my LX5. I had sold my LX3 and always missed it - so took the leap a few weeks ago. It's awesome and you will love it.

spare a thought for your European cousins at this time of thanksgiving. the LX5 is £325, that's ~$520 on Amazon here in the UK - grrrr.

If I could get that $375 price I'd click buy... I get $418 when I click through. Best I can find is Amazon for $409.95, which is down about $10 from this morning.

I've decided this is the right camera for me, I'm just stalking the best deal now.

Whatever happened - it was there earlier. I do wonder if it was a mistake - lucky for the ones who caught it in time to buy. I thought the "mistake" was their note on the page that said "buy used for $399."

Maybe it was a Black Friday thing.

I had paid $407 at Amazon for mine a few weeks ago. Not bad.

Hi,

I too am a new owner of the LX5. No regrets so far although can't help but wonder how the Canon S95 would have done. The battery life and 24mm Leica lens convinced me to choose the LX5. The lens cap is not an issue for me personally. I've read where the G11 has had some issues with the lens blades somehow scratchiing the front element. When I bought my LX5 from Amazon, I got the Panasonic brand cards which were quite cheap. The 4GB card sells for $15 and the 8GB for another $10 more. I went with the 4GB, and those are class 10 cards by the way. I guess I am all Panasonic :), but just bought the Olympus hand strap as I am not a fan of the neck strap (no room in my case). Good luck with your new camera.

Mike
