I've seen many recommendations on the forum of Ilford Gallerie paper for use with Canon printers. I'm just about to place an order for some, but don't know whether to get the Classic or Smooth.

Looking at Ilford's web site they are very different papers. Does anyone have a reccomendation on which I should buy - they are both the same price.

Tim

Classic is designed to resist fading, drying time is much longer than most papers

Smooth is a 'normal' fast-drying inkjet paper

i use Classic with the canon s9000, it took a while to find the best print settings and to create a profile, having done this the results are excelllent

the profiles are generated by profile prism, the terms of use do not allow sharing profies except via the prism ftp site

if you want to try the effect of different profiles there is an igc pearl profile publically available at http://www.wandb.com/icc.htm i've seen feedback from people saying it was ok with igc gloss too

if you are getting results that look ok, then using a 'third party' profile may not help... from some testing i did with another s9000 user and from info from other people it seems that there can be significant variations between these printers, some give a green cast on many papers (mine does), while others did not, so if we swapped profiles the results were very poor

this could also be due to differences in the print drivers, i'm using the mac osx driver version 1.5.0, i know pc users have reported that colour varies across different driver versions

but the only right profile for your printer/paper is one that is custom made for it, as well as the printer i've got the scanner and display profiled, this is what gives the overall accuracy

the profile prism software is not expensive, $69, so if you have a scanner i recommend trying it for yourself, it can also profile scanners and cameras, there is a 30-day money-back guarantee, you can find out more info here... http://www.ddisoftware.com/prism/ once you are a licensed user you get access to profiles of their ftp site too

other than selecting the custom profile i use the driver setting i'm using (for gloss and for pearl) is the "photo paper plus glossy" setting, at the highest quality setting

ilford suggest the "high gloss photo film" setting for pearl, but this is not selectable in all paper sizes in canon's osx driver

the paper is slow drying, so allow at least a couple of hours before assessing colour by eye, the canon inks do not stabilise for quite a long time, taking measurements i've found that it is best to allow 2 days after printing profile targets before scanning them

if you are not using a custom profile for the paper then in photoshop set the print profile to the same as the working space profile (in effect this stops phooshop carrying out print colour management)

then in the canon driver use their 'bj standard' colour setting, avoid using the vivid colour settings or similar effects

if this gives good results then great, but if you find you get a green/other colour cast then you'll need to either try manually adjusting colour (tricky) or create a custom profile

ok thanks for your advice
but i cannot afford a scanner for photoprism right now,i kinda blew all meh money on a camera and printer :(

so ile just have to wait till next year when i can afford to buy them

Many thanks for the info. I'll go ahead and order the classic.

The s820/win XP driver also places restrictions on what you can print using the "high gloss photo film". It doesn't allow borderless for example. I'll definitely try "photo paper plus glossy".

Incidentally, has anyone tried the Ilford classic with the 'selectafont' ink. After reading peoples comments about their ink, I'm rather taken with the idea of cheap ink refills.

Yep, I use that combination all the time in my S9000 - now that my rough fading tests have eliminated the Galerie Smooth.

I use Joe Barnhart's profiles for the S9000 and found it best to tweak the saturation down a touch in the printer settings dialog box.

Yes. I have an S820. I use selectafont inks and Galerie Classic Pearl paper. It really knocks out some incredible results.
