I'm about to get an amazing deal on the D3100 and I just want to be sure that this lens will work with it.
Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens

Please verify so I can purchase today. Thanks

Everything will work, AF, etc. No worries whatsoever. That lens was pretty much made to be a kit kens for the D3100 and similar cameras.

The VR version of this lens is much better if you can get a hold of that one instead.

Good to know. How about this lens? Nikon D3100 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens

Does the 18-55 need to be a VR too?

Yes, it will work.
Just to add, if I may, any Nikon (Nikkor) lens with "AF-S" in the designation, will be fully functional. Lenses marked "AF" will mount & meter, but will not auto focus on motorless bodies, such as the D3100.

It doesn't need to be. VR is optical stabilization. If you want that, then you want the VR version of a lens over the non-VR version.

Also, in regard to your original post: Beware of amazing deals; if it seems to good to be true, it usually is.

No lens "needs" to be VR, but it's a very nice feature to have when it might otherwise be difficult to avoid motion blur when a slow shutter speed has to be used.

I could get the Nikon D3100 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens and the Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens
for $638.68. Is that as good of a deal as I thought?

The D3100 with 18-55 VR goes for about $650. The 55-200 (non-VR) costs about $180. You'd probably be better of finding a deal that includes the 55-200 VR rather than non-VR, as VR is quite useful on such a lens.

Just to add, if you find a deal that looks a little too good, research the dealer, starting here:

A lot of too-good-to-be-true prices are scams by bait and switch dealers.

Both the 18-55 and 55-200 variants that have VR are much better optically than the non VR counterparts. They are only a tiny bit more expensive, so the slight premium is very much worth it. Plus, VR is great to have anyways, especially on that 55-200.

Here in Canada the D3100 w/ 18-55 VR and 55-200 VR is $749, which is a good price.
