I am looking to get GF1 as a step up from ZS3 and was wondering how important is the IS for a newbie to DSLR world? Can you share your best settings for general photography. I am leaving on a trip soon and do not have a lot of time to practice.

Just turn it on. The longer then focal length, the more important.

Mode 1 = always on. Has the benefit of stabilizing the live view image, uses battery more

Mode 2= only on at half shutter press

Mode 3 = vertical only, used when panning with the subject.

There has been some debate whether mode 1 or 2 is more effective, but in any case, the difference they are arguing over is pretty small.

If I'm not mistaken, you must be referring to the settings of the Olympus. The GF1 does not have in-body image stabilization so there is no way to just turn it on.

There are two current kit options for the GF1; w/the 14-45, which has IS in lens and the 20mm f/1.7, which does not have IS.

I really wouldn't worry about IS. The GF1 is a performer. The real challenge will be choosing what kit to purchase. The 14-45 will give you some versatility. The 20mm is a fixed focal length, but offers outstanding low light capabilities; it's a gem of a lens.

For beginners just use the iA setting on the camera. Check this out for some more tips:

Uh, no, referring to the Panasonic lenses that have an OIS on/off discriminator device on the side.

Agreed, if he got the 20/1.7 kit he won't have IS, but that lens is so fast you hardly need it

I got the 20/1.7 kit that came with the camera. Thank you all for the advice. Will have to get used to not having zoom on the camera like the zs3

Good choice. I'm almost certain you won't mind moving your feet to zoom. Enjoy

I came from the Panny ZS3 and have been using a GF1 20mm combo for the past 2 months. I will say that I don't mind not having zoom and the lack of image stabilization is not as big of deal as I previously thought while researching what camera to get, but..... Now that I'm pulling off these low light pictures with no flash, I'm starting to wonder what kind of sweet shots I could get with the EPL1's IS!

I would definitely add in body stabilization if I could because it would give 2-3 more stops on static images and just be ridiculous with the 20mm. I've toyed with the idea of going to a local camera store with my 20mm and an sd card and play around with an EPL1 to see if I could give up some of the GF1's high end features (controls and high res screen) for the EPL1 IBIS.

Just wanted to add that the picture quality doesn't even compare. If you've been using a point and shoot camera till now like I did, the difference will blow you away!

I am glad to hear you are happy with it. What are your favorite settings so far? Any suggestions for a Zoom to add to the 20 mm for travel?

I started off always using the aperture mode, but lately I've realized how great the iauto setting is. Seems to keep things simple for quick shooting and when my wife uses it.

As for zoom, I haven't decided which one to get yet...

I just ordered 14-144 from Amazon. Looks like a good companion for travel. I also picked up a viewfinder. I tried a GF1 with that zoom in a store and realized it is hard to zoom looking at a screen.

Dang, that lens is to rich for my blood. I picked up my refurbed GF1 + 20mm for $375 on Amazon, so I'll probably just enjoy it as a great compact fixed lens camera.

I'd like to try the viewfinder, but haven't heard a lot of great things about it because of its low resolution.
