I am looking to get GF1 as a step up from ZS3 and was wondering how important is the IS for a newbie to DSLR world? Can you share your best settings for general photography. I am leaving on a trip soon and do not have a lot of time to practice.

If I'm not mistaken, you must be referring to the settings of the Olympus. The GF1 does not have in-body image stabilization so there is no way to just turn it on.Just turn it on. The longer then focal length, the more important.
There are two current kit options for the GF1; w/the 14-45, which has IS in lens and the 20mm f/1.7, which does not have IS.Mode 1 = always on. Has the benefit of stabilizing the live view image, uses battery more
Mode 2= only on at half shutter press
Mode 3 = vertical only, used when panning with the subject.
There has been some debate whether mode 1 or 2 is more effective, but in any case, the difference they are arguing over is pretty small.
Good choice. I'm almost certain you won't mind moving your feet to zoom. EnjoyI got the 20/1.7 kit that came with the camera. Thank you all for the advice. Will have to get used to not having zoom on the camera like the zs3
I came from the Panny ZS3 and have been using a GF1 20mm combo for the past 2 months. I will say that I don't mind not having zoom and the lack of image stabilization is not as big of deal as I previously thought while researching what camera to get, but..... Now that I'm pulling off these low light pictures with no flash, I'm starting to wonder what kind of sweet shots I could get with the EPL1's IS!I got the 20/1.7 kit that came with the camera. Thank you all for the advice. Will have to get used to not having zoom on the camera like the zs3
