Ok, so I carted the G3 around with me today and put it through it's paces. I'm very impressed with the color fidelity and sharpness, though I seem to be having some issues with the viewfinder and getting things just level. I wasn't shooting with a tripod, and I suppose I'm just getting used the camera. There is a bit of barrel distortion in the viewfinder which I suppose could have contributed to this (wasn't using the LCD.)

Thanks!

Of course after posting them, I realized I captured in fine rather than superfine! Looks like I have a job for tomorrow!

Brian, these photos are very nice. The files take a long time to download. You might want to reduce them and give people the option of seeing them full size if they want to.

Are these images processed in any way? They are very sharp, well exposed, and have wonderful saturation and color.

Thanks!

Sorry for the file size, I just exported them at their original size! iPhoto usually defaults to 640x480, but I wanted to show the detail - and unwittingly the JPEG artifacts present at the fine setting ;)

The best part about the photos are they are straight from the camera. With the exception of the fountain photos, the camera was on AUTO. For the fountain pics, I used a shutter priority mode with a speed of 1/250sec.

I'm very happy with the quality of pics so far. When I retake some of them in superfine, I'll be sure to include a lower res option.

Brian:

Awesome shots! I wonder why the sky is so blue, like you were using polarizer filter (I assuming not since there is no filter adapter yet for G3 8^(

Thanks for sharing.

G3 - the next best thing I've ever owed!
Peter

Thanks!

It was just a very clear day today in Cincinnati. the Mt. Lookout shots were at about 12:30pm and the Marriemont shots were around 4:00pm.

Everything was shot using AUTO with the exception of the fountain shots (at 1/250 Tx). I didn't explicity turn on the ND filter either (hadn't found it in the menus yet!)
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for posting these! Your comments are good, and especially noted that you shot in Fine and not Superfine mode. The artifacts are very obvious in the skies when viewing these images full size. It makes a pretty compelling reason why never to use the lower settings. I can think of a few other complaints about the quality coming from the G3, but I'll reserve those judgements for superfine photos.

Great shots! Good subjects, look forward to seeing more in the future.

Thanks for doing all this work Brian,

Honestly though, so far, I have been unimpressed with all the G3 pictures I've seen posted recently (especially the pbase pics... is it just me or do pictures on pbase just look ... mushy? soft, dim, unsaturated and lacking contrast/snap).

I'm very glad to hear that you used 'fine' instead of superfine compression, this (hopefully) explains the horrible banding in the sky, and lots of softness in the trees (leaves not well defined). I think you'll find that superfine or RAW (that'd be best if you could swing it :-) ) make a huge difference in sharpness and color artifacts; as you mentioned already.

Thanks again, looking forward to your RAW and/or superfine samples. And no worries on the big posts, i like it that way :-}

Best,

Danny

envy you for being able to shoot with the G3 in the sun (it> 's raining here:-(, and waiting for delivery of my G3:-()

very nice shots. No problem for me to download big files (have a DSL), but just would like to read EXIF data,- no chance, since I wanted to confirm, if you were really shooting at ISO 50.

It would mean much more, if you could manage to show us some side-by-side shots of G2 and G3, since the G2 may achieve the same results in this excellent lighting situation as well:-)

I like photos posted in their original size without any post-processing. And yes I am using a cable modem so file size should not be an issue.

Do u sure it was at fine setting?the file size is around400-500k -just about1/4 of superfine and very visible JPEG artifacts! So i think maybe it was shoot at normal setting.

Actually, what's happened is when I exported from iPhoto, it recompressed the files. I'll redo it with the imported originals - which look a lot better.

Thanks for the heads up!

Hi Brian,

Thanks for posting the pics, it's good to see what the camera is capable of.

There's only one thing that's been bugging me so far and I've seen it in quite a few shots, something that looks like CA or blooming (I'm not sure how to tell them apart!) I hope you don't mind but I just cropped one of your pictures to show what I'm talking about. Here it is:

Sorry if there are JPEG artifacts, I had to resave it.
What do you think? Is this normal or really bad?
Thanks for enlightening me.

I think a lot of it is the JPEG compression. It turns out when I exported the files, they got recompressed. I'm making a revised page now.

Brian, I was referring mostly to the color (of the branch(es) in this case). Does it really have something to do with JPEG compression?

On reflection, I don't think so. However, in that case, I think it's more that the photo is overexposed - and I hadn't found the ND filter yet ;)
