as good as it gets...: Contax G 28/2.8 @f:8, 1/200, ISO 200

Looked at the Tiff. Looks fantastic to me. Beautiful sharpness and clarity all over the frame. What a great lens ... unfortunately now I want this lens! ;)

Congratulations!

thanks..:-) absolutely no need to congratulate, the picture is nothing special. but i think it is one good example of what this lens is able to deliver and that is why i posted it..:-)

no, all i did was apply some unsharp masking as i said first.

no other manipulation what so ever.

i am sure this is one of the best lenses in this focal length. i love the straight lines and the corner to corner sharpness. it is just a good feeling to know you won't be let down by your tool.

may I know which adaptor (brand) did you use? did you need to do any modification to the rear of the lens? Thanks

you don't know how up to date your question is...;-) you will see why tomorrow in a new post...haha...

i was using a "kipon" type adapter, meaning: not by kipon, but same look.

btw i have purchased a second one, from the same site in the US, and this time it was a variation of it where the focusing ring has indents all around, so it has better grip.

pls wait for my post tomorrow, and you will get much more interesting info, i hope..;-)

it is absolutely beyond me how they could come up with this polished areas...it unfortunately shows that the real life application know how is missing...

i also think this is at the origin of the soso smoothness of the operation in general: the ring works super when no lens is attached...but then..

maybe they should invest in a lens....;-)

Yeah, I was shocked that only half the grip was knurled. That was a terrible decision. In all honesty, though, I actually prefer the sections that I put leatherette on to the knurled part, so now I kind of wish that I could buy one with an entirely smooth surface, so that I can put leatherette all the way around it. Go figure!

.. an appropriately sized rubber band ( black of course ) around the focus ring would give a better grip ?

haha...entirely smooth, not exactly a vendable product...;-)

but: if you know someone with a lathe...then you can disassemble the adapter, bring him the ring and tell him to make it smooth all over...

but then...if you know someone with a lathe...you may just as well wait until tomorrow and wait for what i will post...;-)

haha..all i can say: don't expect too much, you may just as well be very disappointed...;-) it is definitely not for everyone..but then: the contax g lenses are neither, aren't they....;-)

Those Contax are nice, with the short adapter, going for about 330 on ebay.

A poor man's elmarit-m, though not nearly as sharp.

For about 215 you can get a canon fd 28 f/2, bigger, not as cool-looking, but.......

For my 28 i went budget and picked up a Kiron f/2 for around 80USD.

Love the sax player...

Partly due to your posting here, I am now the proud owner (or will be when it arrives) of a Contax G 28 f2.8. I had already bought the 90 f2.8 and an Olympus Pen-F 40mm f1.4 and thought that was enough "little" lenses. When I saw your image and some others I had to rethink the situation and went looking for a 28. I found one for what is now the "reasonable" price of US$325 so I grabbed it!

I think the prices have increased even in the couple of weeks I've been researching the alternative lenses. I don't remember that happening when I was going through the same thing with the M4/3 cameras a year ago.

i really strongly disagree. i was willing to bite the bullet and go for the elmarit. i posted about this in another thread (quest for a pocketable..) i definitely PREFER this lens. if you read what ken rockwell is saying about this lens :
http://www.kenrockwell.com/contax/g-system.htm

and i think his opinion is benevolent with respect to the leica. i felt this one is actually better...;-) and not to forget: handling: the focusing rocker on the leica is great for a rangefinder usage, but not for the typical nex way of photography, where i hold the camera in front of me, sometimes even on waist level. i really think sometimes less can be more, and i will post more about this later today...:-)

I have the Metabones adapter for the Contax G 28mm. Very happy with it although the Metabones is relatively heavy and large diameter....no problem finding the focusing ring and it does not jam like cheaper adapters.

By the way, the Contax Zeiss 28MM when used wide open, seems to be softer in the corners and border when used on the NEX vs other cameras....I believe this is due to the sensor proximity to the rear element. Center sharpness is still good wide open....I like the 3D effect and don't mind the soft corners at 2.8. Stopping down completely eliminates this issue and very sharp at F4 and higher.

Here is a quick informal test of the lens:

you're prolly right did some unscientific testing last night with the kiron and a loaner v.3 elmarit-m I have at f/4

To my surpise the kiron was right there in sharpness.

Both seemed sharper in jpeg than the image in this thread, but maybe I should have downloaded the .tiff

Today I'm playing with my new Soligar CD 135mm f/2, which looks pretty wild on the nex. 156USD on ebay last week.

I like it.
