D700 and just a touch down from wide open at f/1.6.

Also, a group shot for fun.

great job! love the 1st one

The third image is my favorite of the set because of the colors and the expression. However, the framing was a tad tight. In my opinion, you needed a bit more breathing room both on the left and right.

Shame about the belt in image four. Looks a little phallic.

Thanks for sharing the set.

Peace

Great set of pictures. Thats why I love photography. The 1st one stands out for me. The last one is fun to watch.

Sharp and colourful - lovely off-the-cuff stuff.

You know what is interesting ? - image #4 at 1/200 shows minimal blur.
Either you specifically captured the jumps at the top, before they came
down, or it is the fact that on FX, the 85mm gets close, and minimizes
any movement . . . Or they just hung there, defying gravity, waiting for
you to finish fiddling with ISO, shutter and aperture settings :-)

Whatever - cool shots

It was such a fun time. They were very enthusiastic and the 'jump' shot was one they really wanted. They were so excited to see it turn out so nicely. I didn;t notice his belt on the LCD screen, otherwise I would have had him tuck it in. It's good for a laugh though.

Keith, I was worried after I packed up to go home, because I realized I was still shooting manual mode, and didn't change anything to offer a higher shutter speed. Luckily the speedlights did their job to capture and freeze the moment. If you look at their feet and legs, there is some ambient blur there. I was very happy they turned out so well. I have several like this, sdaly, all of them have the middle guy's belt at full attention, LOL.

For the close up portraits, I was using a shoot thru umbrella, probably 26". For the jumping shot, I used bare speedlights, cross lighting them.
Just curious, were you using a diffuser for the flash and what type?

actually, the best moment to shoot a jump is while the subject starts to descend.

shoot during the ascending phase, and hair and clothes are clinging to the body, just the way they do under normal gravity; the effect is that of someone hung by invisible ropes, or even laying down: rather static.

shoot during the descending phase, and hair and clothes start flapping around, giving a very dynamic effect.

another trick is to shoot from below or even ground level (possibly with a PC lens) to give the impression that the subject is jumping really high.

of course, groups should jump in sync, which is not always easy to obtain from your subjects.

i regularly shoot jumps in the studio, at 1/200, with normal (i.e. slow) studio strobes; the remaining bluriness adds an impression of movement. you'll find examples under 'jumps' at http://www.johanbuelens.net/ .

D5000 has some issues....maybe a D300 could. I would imagine (and I have a vivid imaginations) that the D7000 is probably good enough, fast enought to track AF with this lens.
