HS10 With Tele Attached

love to see more from your birding shots you realy know how to handle the beast with tele :-)

Just got a used Sony HGD-1758 (the predecessor of DH-1758), seems great, but having no time outdoor yet to give samples. I can use the zoom starts from 4x and beyond, and my HS10 has no problem in focusing. The only note, it brings the name "High Grade", and it comes really big and heavy. But the lens is great. The DH-1758 is smaller and much lighter.

For these shots I used the Sony VCL-DH1758 Teleconversion Lens. Take note that there may be a few 'hot' areas in these photos (I actually hesitated in sharing these because of such). I did NOT use a tripod for any of the shots; using such would have markedly improved the results IMHO.

WOW! That is a excellent shot for a hand-held P&S camera with a teleconverter and ISO800. Good job!
This bird looks a bit possessed based on its expression, but I was pleased with the results of the HS10/tele combo. Note the ISO 800.

All the best,

Photographers take pictures, not cameras.

Hi SO, good bird shots, many thanks for showing me what can be done with the HS10+1758tc. I have had that for 5 years with my Sony H5 & therefor it was a big consideration in buying the HS10 that it would fit. One thing I have found is that there is less CA with the HS10 than the Sony H5+tc combo but will have to work at it to get the IQ that you are getting. Eric

Let's hope it does the job! Just dug that cheap one up and tried it again. It is crap on the HS10, but seems to be OK on my Canon lens. I've also ordered a converter for my G11, so the 1758 will have a dual role.....

Mick...

BTW I thought I would get this thread going again to help you catch Lloydy as he's way ahead in the number of posts! =D

Goof luck Mick. Remember to take the UV filter off if you have one.

Apologies if my lack of photographic knowledge is catching.

What's a UV filter? Is it any thing to do with making coffee? =D

Mick..

Mick that is terrible. Even I tell better jokes. Well, maybe not.

I haven't done any objective testing but a UV filter on the HS10 at full zoom must have some negative effects. The question is how much? If one just leaves the UV filter as a way to protect the lens, which is what I was always told, ten you may be starting behind the eight ball before you even click away. Then put more optics like a TC in front and is must compound the problem.

Anyway, that is all subjective as I have not done any valid testing of it.

Now that I have gone this far, do you have a UV filter on your HS10?

If so, why?

I did try some on previous digi -cams but found no benefit at all so I don't use them.

Talking about bad jokes, I remember answering one of your posts with a classic but you must not have read it!
Any way my memory is that bad that I cannot remember 'What I wrote'.
I am however working on a nick name for you!
Here's some off the top of my bald head! =D
'Auzzie Mafia'
'Nikon Man'
'Danny Boy'
'The Pizza Express' etc.,etc.,etc.,

Mick 'Larry David look-alike' Magoo...............

The latest one to stick is from my 13yo nephew. He calls me the Walrus. It's okay though as you can imagine I give it back to him.

Now if we are talking nick names, I ask you: do you remember Mr Magoo?

If you are my age or older you must which means you will hate my question: Apologies in advance.

ps: love a joke, you have to find it again.

Ah! So you must look like Merv Hughes!

Yes I do remember 'Mr Magoo'. He was an old guy with bad eye-site, just like me!(that's why I need good auto-focus)....

It would take too long to find that post as I'm that old and could be dead before finding it! =D ...

Old Mick(63).. Yes! 63, but with a mind of a 12 yr. old =D ....

I put on a Tiffen UV filter, because:
1. Our environment here is dusty most of the time, so it protects the lens.
2. I have small children that love putting their fingerprints on any lens :)

Once I got the HGD1758, I also thought the negative effect of stacking UV+TC that is equal=more lenses.

Actually when I remove the UV it seems my HS10 gets focus little bit faster and more precise. I tried to put back the UV, tried shooting again, I think I can bear the result.

Here with UV+TC. handheld. For this moon, I usually use burst mode (cause it is handheld). And usually I took 2-3 sets of burst shoot. Just in case the cam can not focus and (mostly) my hand shakes.

Also this. UV+TC, handheld. The plane is quite far away, captured only once. Seems little bit soft.
