DXOMark Pentax K-5 vs Nikon D7000 vs Canon 7D

i'd say the d7k and k5 are pretty close considering they're cut from the same die (or so they say).

both are good, so glad to see it beat the 7d :)

Rather unfortunate about the Canon 7D.

It is still a very capable camera in so many other ways, but the 7D looks pretty convincingly outclassed in this department.

If sensor performance is so close, then the decision to buy Pentax or Nikon will basically be made on other factors such as price, features and the actual images that come out of the camera. Pentax has a truly competitive offering and will likely do very well especially compared to past models but still has its work cut out going against Nikon. I will stick with Pentax myself but an old saw still kinda rings true, no one ever got fired for buying a Nikon. People looking to buy a DSLR at this level will look closely at the comments made by K-5 owners.

I suspect most sales will be based on perceived value
that will vary from user to user based on different criterea.

If you own decent glass for either then that a no brainer.
but everything else is up for grabs right down to I liked the name :)

People will get really fractious when other's question their perceived value, and still other will try and foist the perceived value on other insisting everybody else is wrong.

In short it will be business as usual on the Pentax forum :0

:) :) :) The original saying came from Corporate-land with regard to IBM and computers.

For decades, IBM was almost a no-brainer choice for Fortune 500 companies looking to buy anything from a mainframe system to notebooks to desktops. If you somehow put up a proposal paper with a recommendation to purchase some other company's offering, you'd be expecting a lot of probing from the top brass.
I used to work for a company like that :)

real - measured ISO of Nikon D7000 is lower than K-5 has

D7000 has overrated ISO

for example,
ISO100 = measured 83 vs 91 (K-5)
ISO200 = 167 vs 183
ISO400 = 328 vs 363
ISO800 = 658 vs 717
ISO1600 = 1269 vs 1417
ISO3200 = 2627 vs 2864
ISO6400 = 5197 vs 5873

What is really great is that Pentax was able to source a high quality sensor from Sony at the same time as Nikon! A few years ago, Pentax always had to wait for the Sony sensors about 12 months after they were available to Nikon. The real breakthrough is that Pentax can now keep up on IQ with the competition instead of lagging. Possibly the recent success of cameras such as Kx has created the volume so that Sony will treat Pentax better.

Pretty much as expected. Both great cameras!

And maybe the use of of non-Sony sensors in K20D and K-7 had something to do with it as well. I bet it helped give Pentax some leverage at the negotiating table.

Zooms? pfffft!

Yes, I'd forgotten what company the original version referred too, and it held true for a long time. Hopefully Pentax will be able to make the same kind of inroads that other PC makers eventually made, though a lot of names in the PC world came and went before IBM got displaced (at least in the PC arena)

I noticed that too, Pentax is more accurate.

The extra 2 points for K5 (well within margin of error of 5 points re D7000) come for the extra base ISO DR, basically, but that's because it goes down to ISO80, which Nikon didn't include. Check the graphs, up to where RAW NR kicks in (ISO3200) for Pentax K5, they are a perfect match.

If one wants, s/he can just give a little more exposure at ISO 100 and get same performance overall.

These sensors are exactly same silicon and low ISO ADC, as expected.
