I just got this lens and saw some strange dots when I shot against the sun. Before you dismiss them as flare, please take a look at the images.

Here is the original picture.

I bumped exposure to +2 using DPP and saw this.

What are those dots? I first noticed them when I was shooting another properly exposed picture. I thought it was caused by the dust on the filter. I cleaned the filter and saw this when I took this picture.

Do I have a defective lens? Or it is something else?

I will try to do it again tomorrow without the filter, but I it is midnight now and the sun won't come up for a few hours.

BTW, the filter is a B+W MRC I got from BH 3 years ago.

Thanks.

have the same picture (my son against sun) and the same "issue" but in my case it was dust in the wind. I think this should be the same case here. Dont worry.

I too suggest dust particles in the air outside of the camera. I would doubt you would see them in the lens itself

There's no way the particles could be in focus if they were in/on the lens. The only possible explanation is that they were indeed a part of the scene, i.e. dust (or similar) particles in the air around the boy, caught by the sun.

my thoughts exactly. The joy of incredible detail! ;-)

Definitely dust, some of which is in focus, some not and fading into bokeh, all of which is Brightly lit by the sun. This often happens in flash photos as well.
Enjoy.

It is funny that people getting $2500 to shot this kind of shots and don't care that shot is badly composed, exposed & cropped etc but worry about some microscopic dust in air ... :) That is wrong point to worry about to me.

It just amazes me to no end what kind of people we get on this forum. People who would jump at the chance of bad-mouthing the other people's work, based on one picture. To make it worse, the person who make such comment has no pictures on his gallery.

Are you so lonely that you just need someone to talk to? I feel sorry for people like you.

The photo was put there to illustrate my concern, not to show off my photo capabilities.

I guess that is pretty amazing.

I had the 70200 2.8 V1 for 3 years, and I never saw dust are rendered as such. I went through a few files to look for that.

With the 70200 2.8 V2, I observed the issue on two separate days.

Every shot I take is in perfect focus and no one could compose better . I meant to take all those pictures of the ground , the sky and shoes . I used to take pictures of inside of lens cap - just to check it for dust .

I do get a few with the dust and quite a few in autumn / this time of year from pollen . [ that's the reason I always have some kind of filter on all my lenses . ]

It sounds funny but there really is a lot of junk in the air - that's why we have pretty sunsets .

I just ordered the mk II today and hope it focuses that well . Look at thread coming out of shirt sleeve . by the way , how did rest of shot come out- pretty close 1/3 compositions both vertical and horizontal .

The V2 is really amazing in terms of sharpness. I have so much fun @ 2.8.

Have lots of fun with your new lens.

Yes this lens is extremely sharp and it should come with a warning notice!

I took a photo of my aunt this weekend and she is in her mid 70'5. To my eyes she looks like she is doing well for her age but my lens tells a different story lol. The sharpness is so unflattering I would not dare show her the photo, without adding allot of PP softening.
