PC or MAC

For everyone like you, there's 9 saying the same thing about Window PCs. :)
Since this is a photography site, it's relevant to point out that those numbers way are off. Among creatives, the Mac/PC percentage is either even or possibly in favor of the Mac depending on which graphics/photo software company you talk to.

I use a mix of PC's and Mac Pro computers. 99.9% of the time I spend with various computer glitches is with the PC's. I upgraded my OS on the Mac's without incident and without having to download new software or new device drivers.

When I do any image processing on the PC's it is painfully slow compared to the Mac's which have a more efficient operating system and more efficient memory management. Windows Vista was 50% less efficient in its use of PC resources than Windows XP. Windows 7 is 10% more efficient than Vista. No such penalty with the Mac OS and there is only one flavor not six or seven versions as with Windows 7.

I have worked professionally with PC's since DOS 1.0 and I prefer not to think about how many many years have been wasted keeping Microsoft's various operating systems working.

If you want a computer that just works get a Mac. If you want to save $300 get a PC and then spend $300 on annual subscriptions to anti-virus, spyware, firewall vendors to patch the holes and spend hours having fun looking for fixes to computer glitches on forums and on hold waiting for someone in tech support to take your call.

I use $300 "disposable" netbooks running Linux when I travel instead of a $1100 Apple laptop but that is the only non Mac OS computer I will invest my money and more importantly my time into for my personal and my business needs.
For everyone like you, there's 9 saying the same thing about Window PCs. :)
Yes, from what I understand many accountants actually prefer PCs. :)

What's being a photography site got to do with my statement. Did I say everyone on this site? At what length will an Apple fan go to make a case?

For the record, if you look at the activity of the Mac Talk and PC Talk Forums here on this site, The PC Talk Forum is slightly ahead.

But overall, PCs lead the Macs by about a 9:1 ratio. This is indisputable.

Ah, once again, we actually agree.

In the larger world, where computers are used for everything from POS terminals to airline reservations, yes, PCs outnumber Macs 9 to 1.

But here, that doesn't really apply. And your own forum count bears this out. The 9:1 ratio of the larger world does not match up at all with your forum observation that the PC forums here are " only slightly " ahead of the Mac forums...actually corroborating the 50/50 split I mentioned earlier within the domain of this site, profession, and community, which is photography.

You talk about the lengths a Mac user will go to make a point...why do you keep beating us over the head with this 9:1 market share stat against Macs? As I've said before here, that makes no more sense than saying that America is not important in world affairs because Americans represent less than 5% of the world's population. The actual influence on the world, as with Macs, is not connected to that number at all. Heck, the alleged 10% Mac share of computing is actually double America's share of world population :)

I truly wonder about someone (like mamallama) who for months and months is one of the highest posters in the Apple forum, (and he doesn't even own Apple products / though he says his daughter does, if memory serves) . . . For what reason would someone do this? It's obvious he has it out for Apple or anyone who enjoys Apple. But to spend THIS much time doing this shows some weird issue he has outside of a simple brand choice. To spend THIS much time on a forum to just put a product down and the people who use them continually is really about some insecurity, though of course he won't see it.

btw . . I am a Mac guy (since the 80s). Also had many PCs for business reasons (don't like em / this from personal experience / not hearsay). I am not opposed to speaking out when Apples screws up . . . which they do.

AND to me . . . to say PCs JUST from shear numbers actually mean something is BS. We have millions of cockroaches in NYC and mp3s outsell cd / records though they obviously are NOT superior.

How little you know and how much you assume. I, personally, don't have a Mac that I currently use daily for person purposes, for obvious reasons that I've previously stated - more non-proprietary and economical choices . But I do assist 3 others with Macs to keep them going. But recently, one MacBook had to spend a lot of time in Apple Care after an OS upgrade that went sour. And the upgrade was done by Apple Care.

Oh, yes, many of my posts here come when people like you challenge my being here just because I, personally, use a Windows PC and not a Mac.

I see the utility of Macs and think my Mac friends made the right choice for them. But, despite what some here say, they have their share of problems just like any other computer. That's why I suggest to my Mac friends to buy Apple Care.

--mamallama

What do you get with Apple Care? I assumed it was just a warranty extension...I know both my sons told me to get it if I get a Mac - and they're long time Mac users.

Extended warranty is the main reason. You also get tech support which is not necessarily that good.

. . . . so AGAIN, as I said . . . you do NOT own Apple products, yet you are here all the time bashing away. So I'm not "assuming" anything, as facts are facts . . . but you are "assuming" much in almost every thread, as you are not speaking from real ownership and experience. No one would question your being here . . . except it's crystal clear you are here (almost more then any poster!! actually, you usually ARE here more then any other!!!!) to bring people down (you have to admit, it's very childish). There is no real reason. So what if someone is happy with what they have . . . why does that bother you to the point where you are continually here doing all this? That says a lot about you as a person . . . to continually attempt to bring people down. We don't care what you use . . . why do you care so much what we use to turn on the computer, log in here . . go to the Apple Forum to see what has been posted, then search all over the net to find contrary facts and figures to make a contrary point! (since you can't speak from ownership). . . AND you have done all this for months (maybe years) on end! Why the hell would anyone be so concerned about what someone else finds joy in, to want to go to this much trouble? Don't you have anything to do? I'm not a sports guy, but it's like someone who goes to the trouble to get on a subway, go to Yankee Stadium for damn near every game JUST to tell everyone who enjoys the Yanks and and simply going to the games, how screwed up the Yankees are, followed by those who enjoy them! But then you would actually have to experience the game if you went!! Hell, the way you are doing this from the safety of your computer, you are just phoning in your petty taunts when maybe, just maybe you could simply enjoy the game with others or not go at all.

I DO, YES DO own Apple products, probably before you even did. I still have my Apple Lisa (1985???) as a memorial to the struggles I've had with Macs (from Lisa to Mac Plus to Mac SE, ... to Power Macs) over the years. But, I've had less struggles with my Windows PCs, from Windows 2000 to Win 7-64, that's why my Macs are idle or recycled.

But I really didn't know you were the Mac Forum police that I have to report that to. ;)

P.S. Your "facts" are your imagination.

. . grow up man . . . if all you own is an Apple Lisa up to assorted Macs from many years back, then you have no REAL Apple experience of any relevance for those who own them today . . As stated, I too started in the 80s with Apple with a Plus and kept going (though I see no reason to hoard them so I gave them to people in need). Look at your History at dpreview. Look at the one forum you are in more then any other!!!! . . . especially for someone who doesn't own any relevant Apple product today . . For what reason? Are you giving or taking? It seems pretty stupid to base all your so called negative facts on the Apple products you are continually knocking (like iPhones / iPads etc) by your experience from something from many years ago. Also from your History, it is perfectly clear you have some chip on your shoulder about people being happy unless they have your views or desire to bring people down.

AGAIN . . why would it bother you so much that people are happy to go to all this trouble? Anyway . . I'm out of here. You obviously are one more PC / against anything Apple cliche. Of course Apple is not perfect and they screw up. My early Apple computers were signed by those who built them . . . not anymore. Apple is now a huge company capable of making mistakes at times. But considering the alternatives I'm happy I'm with them. Nor so close minded and prejudice toward others that I would spend the majority of my time in the PC forum TRYING to bring people down.

Who needs to grow up? People who go around and snoop other people posting history like a detective just to rag on them. Grow up, get a real life rather than getting a book on me because you don't like what I say.

I don't give a rat's a$$ what you post about anybody or anything except to when it is about me. You take offense just because someone say something negative about your beloved Apple and folk hero, Steve Jobs. They are doing OK without your protection. Go protect something or someone who needs protection, like the needy, the sick and the poor.

FYI, I currently use and help maintain 3 Macs, but not for any personal tasks. I just prefer to use my Windows XP and 7 PCs for my real work. I knock any product that I think deserves it and that includes Macs and PCs. I don't owe allegiance to any company just because I use its computer. I bought the computer, not the company.

You have been in the isolation of Mac World too long.

For example, my dentist has a high tech office with a digital CT scan instead of film x-rays. Instead of film x-rays, the CT imaging system scaned my head and produced a 3 dimensional picture of my whole lower skull and in less than 5 minutes the dentist was able to display and rotate the 3-D image of my lower skull, showing my teeth, bone and soft tissue in coded color based on tissue density. She was able to zoom in on a specific jaw area to determine the surrounding bone density and dimensions for a planned implant. The angle to drill the implant was determined and the computer image was used to assist the operation, I'm told. I was not conscience.

And guess what? When the technician fired up the CT scan machine, the initial computer screen said:* Windows XP*. It must have been a hell of a spreadsheet that computed that 3-D image of my lower skull. :)

Is your dentist still using film X-Rays?
