8x10's

I went there yesterday. Oh-man...what a store. They have everything, they were helpful...and I didn't get the feeling that they were trying to push items on me or sell me something I did not want. I did not purchase yet...will do so on Monday. Thanks for you help !!! Much appreciated!

Good points Baywing...I appreciate your help..and your thoughts.

I have been reading reviews for 3 months now...and have a pretty good idea of what I want. I have decided to buy the Sony707. Now, just looking for the best price.
Yes, Carl Ziess lenses have a good reputation, but these days you
have to be careful. For example, Maytag has a great reputation for
making a very reliable product. They bought out a lesser
manufacturer and now these lesser machines carry the Maytag name.
If you buy the named, you aren't necessarily getting the top of the
line product. I'm not saying that this is the case here, I have a
Sony mini-dv camcorder with superb Ziess optics. With digital
cameras, the quality of the lens is very important, because the
pick-up size is so small (compared to film). My experience in
digital to date is Nikon, so I can't offer any comparison help
other than to study the reviews, user reports and go to a store and
hold them. Pay attention to the cons in the reviews, little things
will grow to annoy you greatly. Kinda like marriage, though
digital is cheaper to get out of. (in most cases!)

The 4mp will allow you to print decent 8x10's but I would not call
them film quality as they fall slightly short, in my opinion. The
5mp would be better for the 8x10's, and get you closer to film
quality. I have done well with 3.3mp and 8x10's look good, but not
as sharp as good 35mm film. You also have to consider the software
and the printer as they are equal partners in the equation.
-- I have seen beautiful 22x28's from 4 mp uncropped . Melene was absolutely correct about cropping.
A good place to have digital enlargements made. Check it out!

Why havn't you checked out the Minolta D7i - you can get it for about
720.00 or less. You have great zoom lens to crop while taking pic and large

enough file to go to 36x44(largest I have had made) and come out beautiful. Why 8x10's? The bigger, the more impressive. Believe me, a 36x44 will amaze you.

Jim... I never thought about the Minolta. I thought it was more than I wanted to spend ($1,000), I am looking to spend no more than $800.

I can get that one for about $720? where? I am not ready to buy anything online, I like to walk into a store and walk out with my purchase.
why 8x10's? dont know, i just thought that was about as big as i wanted.

i am not too familiar with sizes....yes - if i can get bigger, that would be cool.
are you telling me, that i can get a good LARGE print from a 4mp camera?

if so, then i dont need to spend the money for a 5mp. let me check out the links you provided...thanks!!!!

Go for the 5 MP - remember the cropping ability - it just gives you that much more flexibility. You will never be sorry.
