1Ds dead, time to test MACK warranty

Well my recently acquired 1Ds has given up the ghost for no apparent reason. I purchased a MACK 1 year warranty with the camera, glad I did. I'm shipping it off today, I'll report back how everything works out. MACK warranties have a lot of hater on the forums, but assuming they fix whatever is wrong with the camera I'll consider it $59 very well spent. Seems the cheapest repair on a DSLR is a few hundred $$ minimum.

Where did you buy a 1Ds that allowed you to buy a 1 year Mack warranty onto? The 1Ds has been out of production for about 6 years now.

Where did you buy a 1Ds that allowed you to buy a 1 year Mack warranty onto? The 1Ds has been out of production for about 6 years now.

A local camera store where I bought the body. Mack offers warranties for used cameras.

A local camera store where I bought the body. Mack offers warranties for used cameras.

Even ones that are very out of production which have parts that are also likely to not be made anymore? Sounds like a scam that will leave buyers with more trouble than they bargained for.

What will you get? The value of the 1Ds on the used market? $1000?
 
There are parts available for that camera. We repair them every day. When there are no parts for a camera we warranty we either offer a replacement or reimbursement. Because I've read posts from people buying an extended warranty from say a Best Buy purchase who are hoping that if their camera stops working after the model they have is out of production that they will be "given" a new unit of the replacement model.

So I'm skeptical if there'd be a warranty on a 1Ds (stopped production in 2004) that would give the owner a 1Ds3 or 1Ds4 if it stopped working because there's no more new 1Ds units.
 
A) The camera was repaired

B) A replacement camera was offered

C) If no replacement is offered, the full purchase value is refunded to the customer.

Just because someone buys a used 1ds for $700 (which I did) then I definitely do not expect a 1ds MKii or iii.
 
a few days ago there was a question about buying a used 1d/1ds bodies and My replay was against it because those cameras will fail sooner than later.

I guess this can be used as an example.

Having said that, it is good that you had the warranty. I hope that the camera shop honors it.
 
We typically will replace the camera with the same exact model. Usually a refurbished one if available. Sometimes we do offer an upgrade to a new model. It always depends on what is available.
 
Its nice to see mackcam post here. I used to buy mack warranties on all my lenses and (film) bodies back when BH sold them by default .. I didn't do it with a recent 5d2 purchase (a few weeks ago) but this has inspired me ..

I had a 3 yr warrenty on my Sony F717 and it went bad at almost 3 yrs. The Mack warrenty was an excellent bargin and they lived up to there end of the deal and the camera was fixed with no problems from Mack. I fully endorse the Mack Warrenty's.

Thanks Kenny, that's good to hear. I'm a little bummed the process takes 3-4 weeks to get the camera back but it sure beats the alternative.

I bought a second hand original 1D some 2 years ago, very cheap, it's been perfect ever since and I have taken thousands of shots with it, the 1D series is a good investment even when they are old.

For what I paid from mine I have had excellent value for money from it.

Having a warranty is just a nice extra bit of security.
