"As for its most direct competitor, the Sony NEX 5, I would judge them comparable when it comes to overall stills image quality. But the GH2 leaves the NEX 5 in the dust when it comes to ease of use, especially for the more serious photographer who doesn't want to have to fight the camera to find needed functions buried in deep menus, and who value traditional mechanical controls rather than multi-modal buttons. Yes, the NEX 5 is smaller than the GH2 even though it has a larger sensor, but not by that much. But the GH2 has a high quality EVF, and is about as small as a camera can be and still have a full range of mechanical controls so beloved of serious photographers."

Can't wait for NEX 7 or A77...

This guy is an idiot for comparing the NEX5 to the GH1/2.

They are different kinds of cameras.

I prefer the nex, mainly because the difference in size and weight is so much different. For example, the NEX5 is lighter, at 481 grams versus 609 for the GH2. But without the kitlens that is 229 grams versus 394 for the GH2.

As for the EVF; I never grew up with using a viewfinder, so I don't really have any particular feeling about them either way. Just the screen is fine with me, especially since it's a high resolution screen. (920.000 vs 460.000)

I can understand the appeal, but other than being interchangeable lens systems. they are aimed at a completely different audience. Even though the nex has found quite a following there too. ;)
Which NEX should he compare it to? There are not a lot of other choices...or should we not compare mirrorless cameras?
Actually none, of the nex's. The closest competitor would be the Samsung NX10.

Yes what was Michael Reichmann thinking of - the GH-2 & the NEX 5 are cameras from two different generations ? When Sony add more controls to the NEX & design an effective EVF & a more versatile flash system & a bigger choice of lenses then that may be the time to make such comparisons.

The NEX is , as we have been repeatedly told, aimed at P&S upgraders & the GH-2 at a more sophisticated sector of the market.

I'm happy I didn't listen too carefully then. I'm having lots of fun with my newly acquired Nex5 with manual lenses. I'm upgrading from a900 :D

Cheers

Well I see the appeal of the GH2. It has more controls on the body and an EFV. Lets look at the sales figures. The Olympus Pen Lite (E-PL1) is the best selling m43 camera and that camera has NO EVF, so even for the M43 users the EVF is not the most appealing but choose from otherr qualities. (The nex5 is selling much better then the Olympus does (3rd place for the Nex5 and 7th place for the Olympus)

But the Nex cameras has a very small body, a very good tilting screen and some very nice options like sweep panorama, autoHDR, antimotion blur etc....

As long as the camera is selling better then the other brands what brand is to step up?

Idiot or not, but to compare the GH2 to NEX-5 is quite bizare IMHO, wheras the more direct and apropriate comparison would be A33 or A55.

NEX-3/5 is completely different type of camera than the GH2.

Strange my wifes E-PL1 has an EVF. Yes, it's an option, but one the NEX does not have.

Those figures are for Japan only where they worship Sony. Heck the PS3 has always outsold the Xbox360 there even though the xbox was crushing the PS3 globally for years.

Also, the E-PL1 and the GF1 have been out a lot longer than the NEX cameras and are no longer really "current". Wait for the end of the week and the GF2 announcement. The GF2 is said to be smaller than the NEX.

All very true. It has a great sensor also.

But globally it is not. Also, there are about 9 different bodies for m4/3 and if you want to compare sales, you should count sales for all of them.

Here is where Sony needs to step up and where they are behind:
Number of lenses that AF.
Number of lenses that AF faster than 2 seconds.
Size of lenses (they are too big)
Aperture of lenses (2.8 is not that fast)
Speed of AF (read how the GH2 is faster than most DSLRs)
EVF (I'm far-sighted and can't use an LCD without glasses)
Controls and menus
Body options

Here is where NEX is a head:
Sensor size
in camera stuff (panorama, etc)
LCD
camera size (although the new GF2 looks to be even smaller)

What did I miss?
