I was looking forward to this year's airshow as my visit to last year's show revealed the limitations of my TZ3 and spurred me to research and purchase my FZ35. EVF, much longer zoom and faster focusing were the selling points and my FZ35 delivered!

Loved your pictures of the air show. Did the Liberator fly?
Coreky

It's a Curtis SB2C Helldiver dive bomber.

Evan, very nice collection, thanks for sharing them.

I am just learning the FZ38 too and would be very interested to know what modes, settings, AF, etc you found to give the highest hit rate for the planes in flight ??

E.g. how did you overcome the traditional "view freeze" in the EVF, did you use one of the burst modes, etc, etc??

Gear: Panasonic FZ38, FZ8, Fuji F20, Olympus E-600/14-42/40-150.
Wish List:
1: An FZ35/38 with 7.53 MP, a better EVF and a swivel LCD.
2. A spare FZ35/38 with 7.53 MP, a better EVF and a tilt-swivel LCD. . . :)

Thank you Mike! For the in flight shots I used aperture priority, center area focus. Since I panned with the aircraft and only snapped one shot of each pass, I wasn't too worried about the EVF view freeze. Quick AF and AF tracking were turned off to conserve battery power although in retrospect AF tracking might have been just the ticket for those fast moving jets!

Thanks Evan, I found single shots best with my FZ8.

AF tracking seems a bit slow to get into action, just reading the manual, haven't tried it though . . .

For AF I have always used centre area in general (and the excellent Spot AF when needed, not for planes in flight of course) but for planes in flight against the sky I may also try Multi-Area or whatever it is called . . . . .

A very fine collection of the great War Birds! Excellent sharpness and colors. My only nit would be the shutter speed for the prop birds in flight. A slightly slower speed would give a much better prop blur and it appears you have the panning/follow through down pat so you could do that without any problem.
Thanks for sharing these!

Take the scenic route! Life is too short to do otherwise.

By accident, I caught a couple of WWII bombers flying overhead in middle Ohio. With both of these, I was using an FZ18 with a TCON telephoto lens.

There was a B25 Mitchell fly in at a local airport about 25 miles from here. I happen to hear an old plane (old radial engines sound different) and caught this B-25. This is at full size.

Another day I heard a strange sounding plane. I ran out (without camera) and saw a B-24. So just incase, i got the camera ready. A little later I heard another so ran outside and saw a B-17 directly overhead at maybe 1,500-2,000 feet. I had the zoom ran all the way out and ruined the first couple of shots. I backed the zoom down and got this one. This is at half actual image size.

This B17 along with a B24 and an early P51 Mustang were flying from a showing in Dayton, OH to another in Akron, OH. I've seen B-17 a couple of times but never this low. I just wish I was ready and got more pictures.

Wonderful set Evan, the fz35 is the right camera for this sort of thing. They are all excellent, particularly the compositions, my favourite is the Hornet.

I well remember the first time I clapped eyes on a hornet, thinking how small and tight it was as it sat motionless on the tarmac. Shortly after, within a split second of becoming airborne it became truly alive – jaw dropping acceleration and manoeuvrability for way back then. It is certainly aptly named.

Not having seen the new typhoon in the flesh as yet, I imagine it would easily be the modern day equivalent.

Thanks for posting these quality images mate. :D
