Which version do you prefer?

I want to submit a spider picture to a local challenge. I'd like to use the following shot, but I can't decide which version looks better. Let me know your opinion.

I like the colour of the background of this one but as it's similar to some of the colour on the spider, I think the spider gets a little lost.
This one the spider pops more, but there's something not quite right about his whiskers
I think for me, a version between the 2 shots, slightly erring in favour of the 2nd would be good.

The second does look better before you click on them twice to get to 100%, but once there the first one is much nicer. The second looks over-sharpened and is much noisier in comparison.
 
Sorry but I think the DOF is too narrow for the subject. I like the intent but not the execution. If I had to pick one between the two it would be the second.

I took a course in art last winter. I learnt the difference between a fine oil painting, and a mechanical thing, like a photograph. The photograph shows only the reality. The painting shows not only the reality, but the dream behind it.
