So this will be the first time taking my D700 along with me on a vacation and I'm very, very excited. As I head out to SF in the first week of November, can any of you recommend any good spots to take pics of SF landscape/Golden Gate bridge?
thanks!

Park your car here: 37°49'45.97"N 122°29'0.77"W
Walk over here: 37°49'39.60"N 122°28'53.86"W

Use Google Earth to enter those coordinates.

Punch 37.83184,-122.49515 into google maps for a nice perspective of the bridge and city. You'll want to park at the green arrow. dave

The points mentioned are good ones. You may also want to continue in this area to the Point Bonita Lighthouse for a good view.

I suggest that you go to Crissy Field, park, and walk along the promenade to the Ft Point area, and from there (At the Warming Hut) you can climb up a set of stairs to the Golden Gate Bridge, and then walk across the bridge. Another spot for a good aerial view of the city is from the top floor of the deYoung art museum in Golden Gate Park (you do not need to pay entry to the museum to visit the top floor). Oh, also the Japanese Tea Garden nearby is nice.

Enjoy your visit!

Take a tripod with you, shoot a panorama of your life.

I shouldn't be giving this spot away... ;)

or Treasure Island for views of the downtown skyline at dawn or dusk.
I visit San Francisco at least once a month and never tire of photographing
the place.

Have fun,

Since we're doing GPS (I love it!) how about my favorite:

park here: 37.809320°, -122.365724°
walk here: 37.809216°, -122.366158°

tripod needed and you need to stand about 5'5" to see over the fence...

Photographing San Francisco Digital Field guide is a very good and inexpensive book that will give you 28 locations and the best places to shoot these locations from. It can be had on Amazon for 10-15 dollars.

I just received this book from Amazon. I bought it used for $7.95. It arrived in mint condition and was recommended by PSA.

I haven't read it yet, but it seems very thorough.
