Hi ,

S45 and G3 functionalities look very similar to me.

What exactly are the differences that differentiate G3 from S45?

Why is it that so many people are going for G3 instead of S45?

Try comparing them side by side. The differences should be more obvious.

G3 has:
-Flash Hotshoe
-Swivel LCD
-4x zoom (vs. 3x on S45)
-1/1250 (vs. 1/1500 on S45)
-F2-F3/F8 (vs. F2.8-F4.9/F8 on S45)
-Available adapter for lenses & filters
-Remote Control

Just one correction: G3's max shutter speed is 1/2000 (at f4 or more) and the same goes with s45. One can't use max shutter speed at max aperture either with G3 or s45.

In case of ambiguity I meant that max shutter speed of G3 is 1/2000 (at f4 or higher) and s45's top speed is 1/1500 (at f? and higher).

Don't forget that only the G3 has the builtin ND Filter

I would think that the one major reason for going with the S45 over the G3 is simply size. The S45 is truly a compact "fit in your pocket" camera which is the primary reason for considering it in the first place. Given the desire for a "mini" camera, the S45 seems to offer outstanding features, build, and picture quality. If size is not issue, than the G3 is the only logical choice. Of course.. the S45 isnt going to be available in the U.S. unless the recent rumors are correct.. and we will possibly see it by the end of the year.

G3 also has a more superior battery life as compared to the S45

The differences are insignificant apart from the 4X zoom which the G3 has.

Many will prefer the G3 because of its perceived higher prestige - bulls* t in my opinion. It's like guys who prefer to go for a very expensive Porsche when a Mercedes saloon will do the job fine. Bigger camera = ***** extension!

I double-checked with Canon, and they still deny that the S45 will ever be sold in the USA.

Umm, sure, ok? The Hot shoe alone is often the deciding factor between the S45 and the G3/G2 for alot of poeple. There are many other differences as well, all of which I see and led me to return my S30 and wait for the G3.

Come on, mark. Why get all worked up about it only to deceive yourself?...the G series does offer some real advantages.

1) faster lens
2) Swivel LCD
3) Remote
4) built-in filters
5) the ability to add lenses/filters/external flash.

In the field of photography, which of these are not important?

BTW, acording to your logic, I must really be hung since I'm comfortable with my "no-extension" lowly S30.

BTW, your Porsche vs Mercedes comparison too funny. You list 2 competing luxury status-symbol items and say that the users of one have a psychological hangup while the users of the other are balanced. So...you're more a Mercedes saloon/S45 kind of guy than those Porsche 911/G3 losers. lol

The hotshoe and faster lens are what brought me to purchase a G1. After carrying it and my external flash around for the past couple years I have changed my priorities and gone with an S45 this time for the convenience of a smaller camera. Either way it had nothing to do with extending any of my body parts...

OK, OK I take your point. But what I was trying to say is that the S45 is a perfectly good camera for over 90% of the photo taking population. The advantages of the G3 are offset by the weight of the camera, and the extra features don't matter to me that much.
