Photography is a lot like sex to me as I can spend hours reading about technique and then when the event happens I get so exicited I forget everything I learned. Sometimes I get lucky and I am happy with the results and sometimes I'm disappointed that I didn't apply the fundamentals I have learned in order to achieve better results.

I am having fun learning and will continue to practice as much as I can. I hope my wife agrees.

Ahem....Practice makes perfect?

In all seriousness now...practice :)
Practice the most mundane photos you can think of....

You see something you like here or photosig, go try to replicate it and see if you can do it better.

Then all those things you read about technique make sense....

After a while, when you know what you're planning on shooting you'll be getthing more and more of the shots you want....

Didn't I just read a thread about premature shutter release?

I can tell you with absolute certainty which one cost me more. . .

Any day your socks match and you are not on fire is a good day.

John,

Never thought about it that way till you mentioned it. A subject is the important * motivation* to do photography and it has to have something to stir your emotions. Lighting in photography is probably the most important factor and it'll make the subject look attractive or it will spoil it.

The lighting brings up the ambiance that will set up the tone of the situation. Framing is very important. How you want to frame it really shows your favorite part,a location that you would think will bring the most impact from the scene.

We're in a digital world today and the greatest thing about digital photography is that if you don't like it,you erase it and do it again and again and again till you get the right shot or till the batteries run out.

And when you get a good shot finally and check the image, you would say," Oh,My God!! This is Soooooo Gooood!!! I want to do it again!!!!."

What a happy world we're in !!. :)

I know intellectually a lot more about cameras and photography, but when I'm in a hurry taking photos, I sometimes forget to practice some of this information. Then I kick myself later.

I agree......

1. Don't get to shoot as often as I like..
2. Can't always be in the right location at the right time..
3. Don't always have the right lighting..
4. Not nearly enough "time' exposures..
5. Certainly don't understand the subject matter like I should..
6. I like to shoot subject again in a reasonable amount of time..
7. I love the peaks and valleys in landscape shots
8. It's something I would like to pursue in old age
9. Batteries charging as I type

that we're gonna start comparing Focal lengths here
or recharge times
or Depth of Field
or rapid fire capabilities
or... I'll stop there...

...don't have to pull it out and blow the dust off of it.

...keep it covered when chasing waterfalls.

...let it rest if it gets too hot.

...capture the right subject (ouch).

...use an extender judiciously.

...retrieve permissions when appropriate.

and most importantly...

...have a smile on your face when you finish.

You guys (and girls) are just too funny. Thanks for the pointers. It's a never ending learning experience. Photography, that is. Ok, maybe both.

I do like long zoom on my uzi!
