I want to share with you my very bad experiences, so you don't have to go through the same frustration I have.

I ordered the Viking 256MB CompactFlash, 10/21/02. This morning, the online order status showed "Delivery estimate: November 1-November 4". Just now, it shows "Delivery estimate: November 4-November 11"

I called amazon this morning (there was no phone number listed on amazon website, I had to search for a long time before finding it!) and wanted to cancel my order, because the Viking 256MB rebate deadline is 11/15/02. The gal sale rep told me "sorry, I can't cancel your order because it is currently in the shipping process and because we already charged your discover card. you have to wait until you receive it, then request a return shipment sticker from us, then send back for full refund." This is BS and so rediculous. I ask you, if they have not shipped out, then why the heck they charged on my discover card for and why they can't cancel it?

I am gonna talk with them again to see if I can cancel it, now that the expected delivery date is moved to 11/11/02. It will be too late to send a rebate. If not, I'm gonna call a dispute on my discover card.

Please stay away from amazon, so they know they have to improve their service. They are no longer the same company! It sucks really bad!

Usually their delivery estimate is conservative, i.e. you will get your order before the later date. If it's in shipping already, you will get it soon.

In any case, if it will be there before the 11/15 deadline, so why do you want to cancel?

I think Amazon is fantastic. I've placed a dozen orders from them and never have had to call or e-mail them.

... if you had bad expirience doesn't mean that everyone else will or does. I have also purchased from them many times and being myself in retail business I know it's hard to please everyone...

I tell you what ... I ordered so many times in the past at amazon, but not the past 6 months. They USED to be good, up until now! This is not a question of to please or not to please its customers. Their service sucks, period! I should have ordered it at buy.com, and should already got my order by now. I have done lots of on-line orderings, so you don't have to tell me that a 2-week delivery for an instock item is a very bad service.

BTW, it sounds like you work for amazom? If so, good. I just communicate to the right people.

i have also had good experiences with amazon, though admittedly they cannot please everybody. it could have been that they were down to the last memory cards and had to delay yours...or they simply didn't update their site. could be many reasons.

i do have a suggestion though. i buy online all the time and the most important thing to have is a credit card with buyer protection. i believe some AMEX cards have this and others as well. basically, you call up the credit card company and have them fight the battle for you. tell them the situation and i think the credit card company deals with the comapany directly, thus saving you time and grief.

good luck.

lol, no I don't work at amazon and yes you should have ordered from buy.com. As a matter of fact, I received my SimpleTech 512MB CF (for my future G3) that I purchased from buy.com, even though I chose the cheapest method of shipment I got my order in 3 days...

When ordering from buy.com and most online only dealers, check first to see if they publish a phone number for support. Or at least have live online help (buy.com does but its kind of weak.)

I just ordered the Simple Tech today from them. I hope I get the same service you did.

BTW, did you order your G3 yet. If so, what are they quoting you on delivery?

Peter,

Amazon really isn't in the business of offering free shipping, but the "super saver" shipping I'm sure you opted for is intended for the person who doesn't care much about timeliness, and is in some ways an experiment for them (I've read their FAQ and a few other notes about it...go see for yourself).

I too recently made an order for a birthday present, wanted to opt for the free shipping, and was greatly disappointed when I told it would take a full MONTH to get there. I said oh well, wished it would get there in about two weeks (the date of the birthday) and instead it got there in just less than ONE WEEK. If you care so much about the timing, opt for at least UPS Ground shipping and stop whining here. Otherwise, follow the advice of some others and just go to Buy.com or similar (I like http://www.onecall.com a lot too) and I'm sure you'll like their free shipping a lot more (I've even had free shipping = 3-day FedEx from Buy.com!!!).

First, my intention of posting the message was not to whine here! This forum is for everyone to share good and bad experiences, and I hope I did just that.

Yes, free shipment was attractive, but it was not the main reason I placed order with amazon. I did not opt for it, amazon offered me! If you are offered a free shipment by a reputable (thought it was) online store for a competitive price on a item you don't need within 2 weeks, I would be very shocked if you tell me you don't want it! What really bothers me are the facts that they have no customer phone number listed anywhere on their website, that their expected delivery date keeps moving toward the rebate postmark deadline, that they keep its customer in the dark as of why the expected delivery date keeps slipping (they did not indicate the item was out of stock), that they charged my credit card almost right away even though the item is not yet even in the shipping process, that they have no way of cancelling it even though it is waiting to be shipped.

I don't care what they are trying to test, but if it results in customers' dissatisfaction, they'd better dump that stupid cost savings idea. I am big with quality, so few bucks for H&S are in no way a big deal for me. If I really have to order amazon again, I will never order with their Super Saver Shipping option. At least I agree with you on that.

Peter

I don't understand people at times. Amazon is known for being a BOOK STORE. Everything else they sell was an expansion and added later. I order a book from AMAZON and it's delivered 2-3 days later, if they have it in stock. When you order, they tell you how many are in stock.

I ordered my Viking memory from BUY.COM and they memory arrived next day. Shipping was free and the 256MB cost $85. That was their standard price and standard shipping.

I'm carefull to buy specific merchandise from merchants who make their living on that line of merchandise ..... not what was an afterthought.

I had the same problem with my order. They changed estimate

Some people preordered the G3 back when Amazon.com's posted release date was November 1. I wonder if they are going to get their cameras on time, or at the current Amazon.com release date of December 30. I bet preorders came to a screeching halt when Amazon.com posted the latter date.

You have the right to cancel you're order.. they should not give you a hard time because the CF card had not been shipped. As a customer you should be given a chance to change you're mind if the order was not in stock and has not shipped more the reason for them to let you cancel..all they have to do is ask Discover to give you're card credit..Not a big thing it's done all the time at retail stores all over the world.

Ditto on the 512MB CF card and shipping situation from buy.com. I also got a bonus(?) because SimpleTech had packaged a Type II card in Type I packaging. The Type II has slightly better performance and costs $35 more. Only problem is that I'm worried about the warranty now, since my invoice says it was a Type I card.

Anyway, to stay on topic with this thread, let me just say that I've had good results with both amazon.com and buy.com too. Sure, sometimes they can't ship it exactly when they estimate, but it's not that big of deal. I did have amazon delay shipment on a Christmas present one year and had to cancel that because it would have arrived too late. No problem doing that. In the case of the original poster, the order must have went to the shipper/warehouse, so it was 'out-the-door' as far as amazon.com was concerned. Nothing they can do at that point. You can always refuse to accept the package when it arrives and then it will get returned and credited automatically.

Does the rebate form have to be postmarked by 11/15, or do you just have to buy it by then? Usually rebates give you a month or more after the last valid purchase date before it has to be sent in. If that's the case then you're fine because your purchase date was when you placed the order, not when it arrives.

Rob

Right on. Amazon's prices seem to be pretty high as far as I can tell as well. I usually go to Yahoo.com Shopping, do a search for what I'm looking for, then sort by lowest price, then select a credible vender. Works great. I just got my S40 for $438.

Sorry for your experience. However I have only praise for Amazon. I have ordered at least 2 dozen items from them and am always surprised by their fast delivery. --Mike.

I agree regarding conservative delivery estimate. I ordered the same card and received it several days before the estimated date given. I have ordered from Amazon many times without one single problem. I find them a bit more expensive, but always reliable. ( i hope I didn't just jinz my next order)

Now the Viking rebate is another story...
In any case, if it will be there before the 11/15 deadline, so why
do you want to cancel?

I think Amazon is fantastic. I've placed a dozen orders from them
and never have had to call or e-mail them.
