Hi, today I received my new Nikkor 16-85mm lens, after opening it I noticed the box is made of very cheap quality and a very thin cardboard, I am comparing it with the 50mm f/1.4G and the 28-300mm lenses.

The only difference between the 16-85 and the other two is that it's a DX lens and the other two are FX lenses, do you think that Nikon is using different type of packaging for DX vs FX ?

I am concern that the lens might be Imported, Replica or Refurbished, does anyone has the 18-85 lens and can check and compare the packaging with other Nikkor lenses ?, thanks

Refurbished Nikkor lenses come in brown boxes.

A call to Nikon seems in order. If you give them the serial number they can check that's a legit lens. My hunch is that the factory in Thailand made the decision to save money on boxes or Nikon is trying to deal with the strong yen in any way they can.

A current domestic market lens will have a 'US' prefix serial number.

I just bought a 16-85 at J&R in the U.S a couple of weeks ago and the packaging is definitely different and slightly inferior to the packaging on my 105 which I bought here in Australia a few months ago. The lens is 100% genuine though so I wouldn't worry about that.

Is it in their gold/bronze color box? I am looking at the box my 16-85 came in. The cardboard is not very thick but it is pretty stiff.
Yes is Gold/Bronze color Box, everything looks original Nikon and genuine, I am just surprised by the difference with the other boxes.

Yes, the lens seems to be genuine Nikon with a US S/N, it's just the box that looks so cheap.

Just got my 16~85 yesterday from Amazon and I must say that the packaging that Nikon used for this lens is the cheapest I've ever seen from them. The lens box barley passes for cardboard! The rest of the stuff doesn't do much better either.

As far as Amazon goes, their packaging leaves a lot to be desired as well. I'm really surprised that the order arrived in one piece with the shipping box falling apart!
