I am a little confused about all these D's. I am trying to research as best I can....I want the 7D but see a lot of you use 50D's and 60's and such. I am going to be shooting sports, weddings, and Seniors. What's the difference between 60D and 7D?

IMO the most important difference is the AF system and FPS. The 7D has a better AF and is a lot faster, so it is best for sports and tracking fast objects. For all the rest the 60D is as good as 7D.

Apparently you've been using a 7D for at least a few days now. Are you happy with it?

The simple answer is the 7D is last year's release and the 60D is this year's release.

That said, the 7D was a much more expensive camera at it's release at about 2X the 60D's release price. It does have added features which you can find discussed to the point of sickness in this forum. Both cameras will take awesome pictures in the right hands.

One distinct advantage of the 60D is the articulated screen which allows less agile people to take otherwise unreachable pictures: Macro on the ground, and crowds with the camera held high overhead.

The 7D is last year's release and is dropping in price but still more than the 60D. If the 60D's lower price and adjustable screen are more important to you than those added features on the 7D then buy the 60D. I think both are a good buy!

Being 68, I just ordered a 60D with the 17-85 IS lens and the 70-300 IS lens. I will get a Macro lens later since I love to take them.

I have both.

They are both great cameras.

Either one will get the job done, and get the job done well.

The 7D will be better for sports. The 60D is somewhat more video friendly.

No matter which one you purchase, you will have made a great choice.

Although the 7d is with out a doubt 'better' for sports AF wise 'better' is quite relative. There is a fellow who hangs out here and on the rebel forum (timberland I think) who often posts soccer pictures. He has a 7d currently and has posted some amazing soccer photos in very difficult conditions. before the 7d he used a 40d (same or similar AF as 60d) his 40D pictures were also amazing.

The moral of the story is that the 60d is very capable of shooting sports especially if you dont expect to be on the cover of sports illustrated. The 7d may be better but more important that the body is what kind of glass you put in front of it. Teh best AF in the world cant shoot sports with a slow focusing lens.

Not yet, it´s going to take a long time until it gets here, about 3 to 4 weeks (going through custom and all this stuff) as i don´t live in US.

Russ is right on target. You list sports, weddings, and seniors as your interest areas. Of the 3, sports is the area where the 7D outperforms the 60D but the 60D is still plenty capable. I went DSLR to shoot indoor sports and just upgraded from 500D to 60D. Thought hard about 60D or 7D and chose the 60D as it is a substantial increase in capability vs my 500D, and as this might be final sports-shooting year it seemed the 60D was at a sweet spot for what I needed regarding size, cost, and performance.

I have been very pleased with the 60D shooting experience so far. Has performed well in general shooting and at volleyball games; this weekend daughter is in a basketball tourney and will shoot at least 3 games and see how it does at that.

Either camera will do well for you and it really depends on the weighting you place on the sports area. If you want the top of the line APS-C sports camera go with 7D. But until the 7D came along the best APS-C sports shooter was the XXD line and the 60D has the same AF system as they had (possibly 60D is slightly tweaked from what is being said) and it has nearly the same fps.

Buchanan,

would you mind shareing some of your experience with indoor sports vollyball etc and some samples with exif?

My daughter is just starting vollyball and I am having some difficulty getting good shots. I have the 60d and my outdoor sports lens is the 70-200f4 Is. Not sure if this is going to be fast enough for vollyball.

Also know that the 7d uses a CF card and the 60d does not...you would want the 7d if you are going to be shooting in RAW format so you can use a fast CF card. Also i know the 7d uses 2 digic IV processors and I think the 60d only uses 1 digic 4. good luck because up til a week ago I was undecided as well but am going with the 7d

Russ,

I'll see what I can get up here in the way of pics. I think most of what I shot so far is with the 17-55 2.8 as she plays at the local YMCA which splits the gym and play 2 side-to-side matches and you are sitting a few feet from sidelines so my 70-200 f4 IS is too long unless I want to end up with a lot of upper body shots.

That said, last year I used the 70-200 on my T1i there on several occasions to shoot full court BB there (not split side to side play) and F4 worked well when the sun was out as the gym has skylights. Many times it was not over 1000 ISO at F4 so it worked fine. With T1i I tried not to go higher than 1600 ISO unless really necessary; the better sensor and the higher auto ISO choices coupled with the ISO limiter is one of the reasons I bought the 60D.

I find VB best at 1/1000 shutter speed (SS) is you can get there; so it depends on your gym lighting how large an aperature is required. It looks like with noise software 6400 ISO is not out of the question on the 60D so I think even in most of the BB games I shoot my 2.8 zooms will do but I find BB doesn't need as high a SS as VB. If 2.8 won't work, I will go with the 85 1.8.

That would be great it would be nice to have a starting point so I dont have to pull my hair out figuring it all out and trying to reinvent the wheel. Your liking your 60D?
