I see in some photography magazines that turning lens stabilization off when using a tripod is recommended. Should the Steadyshot feature in my NEX-5 be turned off when using a tripod?

I know most would say to turn it off, but I personally leave mine on to compensate for any wind blowing the camera, or camera shake due to traffic if near a road etc.

I don't recall if the Nex manual mentioned, but it's worth going back and checking. For my A100's SSS, the manual said to turn off SSS when mounted on a tripod. Of course, it was easy to do so, with a dedicated switch right on the back...

I'm guessing the reason as: all electronic systems have a degree of random "background noise" inherent in them. Usually this isn't a problem because it's at such a low level compared with the information being processed, in this case camera shake.

But with the camera on a rigid tripod the stabilization system isn't picking up and responding to any camera motion, there's only the circuit noise which would cause minute unwanted movements of the lens stabilizing element.

Yup - that's how it is.

When no vibration is sensed or the amount of vibration is below the treshold of the IS system, the system might experience electronic feedback - almost like loudspeakers. This will cause the unlocked lens elements to move. Turning IS off will lock the lens elements in to place and shut down the current in the elctromagnetic coil surrounding them preventing feedback.

If you have a good tripod, the stabilization will only work against you, so do turn it off. Instead of gaining another stop, you might be losing one!

Some cameras automatically sense when mounted to a tripod and turn IS off. Obviously that isn't the case with the NEX.

FYI: I do recall that the manual recommends disabling stabilization when using a tripod.
