Just got this D5000 a couple of weeks ago and am trying to get the hang of it. Some oics are with the kit lens 18-55mm and i have a couple of older lens i had Quantaray 70-300mm and a Nikon 28-80mm of which i manually focus.....can't wait to get my 18-200mm next week. I would appreciate any advice........

Nice pics - have also just got a D5000 as a lighweight 'alternative' to my D700. Really like this camera except for the small viewfinder.

Coupled with the 70-300 VR lens, this is a great combo. I recently got a 17-55 F2.8 from ebay and it is great with this lens. I prefer to use this camera for some events as the shutter is so quiet.

You will find the focusing using live view and tilt screen sometimes a bit slow but it does allow greater flexibility in taking pics, well for me anyway because of a disability.

I initially had a D5000, sold it and got a D90 and now back to D5000. My wife uses the D700 more but I easily prefer the IQ of the D5000 over the D90 – they do have the same sensor but even Nikon claim the 'newer' D5000 does give better IQ.

Battery life is good but if you do use the tilting screen a lot, best to get another one. The original 18-200 lens was said to be by many not so good – not sure of the latest version. However, if you are in the UK, the latest edition of Amateur Photographer has done a side by side comparison test of this lens with a Sigma 18-270 and rate them both highly and very similar – good thing as the SIgma is significantly cheaper.

You really wanted to get thoughts on pictures taken with a camera other than the D7000? This weekend?

Seriously, I really like the 2nd to last shot. I like the texture of the wood contrasted with the outline of the bird. I think a little less depth of field would have blurred the background more effectively, but I really, really like that shot.

I'm in the middle of choosing either D5k or D90, would you quote the reference of Nikon claiming the D5k to have better IQ over D90.

some nice shots there

i see you are using very small aperture on some shots, this is deliberately i presume?

Personally i like to aim for 8-11 range for aperture with the 18-55 when i want sharp. If i dont then i'll go for max aperture or one stop down.

Good to see someone out there having fun versus, well you know...taking test shots with a d7000 ;-)
