Any birders among the D7000 owners?

I'm not a birder, but enjoy taking some images of birds on my back porch. I wanted to try the 70-200 2.8 VR1 w/ 1.7x TC this morning and the birds were active so I gave it a try.

With the dark background and harsh sunlight, many were a little overexposed, but even with OOC JPGs, I was able to pull the highlights in...not much was clipped.

There are cropped and resized 50%. Did the Shadow/Highlight tool to pull in the highlights. Sharpened after the resize. No Noise reduction.

I shoot eagles in flight normally with a D3 and D300. The D7000 was not up to the task this morning unfortunately.

Was it the AF that was the problem? I'm using the D90 now. I would think that it would be an improvement for me on the occasions I shoot BIF.

Most of what I do are little perching birds which have their own set of challenges.
