Self portrait we all know how hard they are to do by oneself. Have I got the pose and the lighting right.

Main light (60 X 60 softbox) camera right and fill light (40cm umbrella) camera left 1 f stop less.

Any comments or advice would be very much appreciated.

"Right" is something only you can define. The only critique I think I can add is that both are lit a bit too flat to be interesting. Reduce the level of your fill by a stop or two and see how you like it. Some might not like the stark, dark background but I like that effect sometimes.

Gary,

On the first portrait it looks a little underexposed, and a little flat. I'd move the main light closer, and the fill light farther away. This will create a more dimensional look to the face. Some people like hiding the distant ear by turning the face away from straight on (Ron Kramer), others like showing both ears symmetrically (Monte Zucker).

The second portrait has better exposure, and is a classic 2/3rd pose. It could be improved with greater lighting contrast between main and fill.

Keep posting.
