I knew somebody had posted about these before, and fortunately I remembered it was at Penn Camera.

For those interested, here are the various raincoats available:

body + 70-200/2.8 http://www.penncamera.com/store/view.cfm?id=3462

body + short lenses http://www.penncamera.com/store/view.cfm?id=3465

body + 400/2.8 http://www.penncamera.com/store/view.cfm?id=3456

body + 300/2.8 http://www.penncamera.com/store/view.cfm?id=3454

body + 600/4 http://www.penncamera.com/store/view.cfm?id=3460

body + 500/4 http://www.penncamera.com/store/view.cfm?id=3458

I picked up one for my 70-200/2.8 . . . . hopefully I'll never need it.

I was recently looking at a couple of similar raincoats (forgot where, offhand) but they were of the type where you slip your head underneath. I like these much better... Add to the fact that I was thinking of using a gallon-sized Ziploc(TM) bag... Heh.

How short of a lens does that short one allow for? I'm thinking you could just fold back the hood as needed, it appears to have a velcro closure on the bottom there.

It doesn't really say.

I thought about getting a shorter one, too. But then I realized that if I were shooting in the rain, I doubt I'd want to change lenses. And I always shoot with my 70-200/2.8 IS on the camera (as long as there's enough light). I don't think I've ever shot exclusively with the 28-70/2.8

Hoi Guys:

I like their idea of a few pennies, say it fast and it doesn't sound like much, four thousand! and that's for the smallest one.

Be sure to mention my name so I get my $5. Just kidding. LOL.

I wonder if they'll run out today? Probably not of the 300/2.8 ones, though.

They're gonna wonder, though, why they got so many orders for these things today.

Why do you have to ask the TOUGH questions? LOL.

I'm not sure. It looks like the lens would be protected OK.

I'm guessing that the bottom of the camera (which would be on the right side in portrait orientation) would be exposed. I can't tell how much overhang there is.

I'll let you know.
Will they work vertical? (nt from NT)

Their site has some nice pictures of those raincoats (but you have to search a bit to find them).

They're $180 here in the US (for the 70-200/2.8 version)

(snip)

You would post this today! :-( Especially when I was searching for this exact same thing just last week because I had a shoot in Austin, TX, outside in the rain this past weekend. ;-) The only rain coats I could find locally were for bodies/lenses that are at least a foot long.

Ah well. The combination of using the rain-proof pull-out cover on my Lowepro bag, and wearing a large trenchcoat where I could hide my camera 'til I needed to take a shot seemed to be okay. One worries about water with a D60...

Heh. Thanks for the great links!

A little rain won't hurt the D30/D60. I shot with my D30 + 70-200mm (non IS) in the rain during a triathlon, and the camera was just fine. Then again, what we consider rain here in San Diego might be considered a sprinkle elsewhere. :-)

Take Care,
Ben Horne

Elequin-

My girlfriend lives in Austin! Maybe in a few years I'll move there but for now it's flying there to be with her!

My longest lens is the 75-300IS. Do you think you could use one model for other sizes, or do you have to buy different sizes? I wouldn't mind investing in one raincoat.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but Aquatech (Australia) has a nice weather shield as well...

Another source for rain gear is

http://www.apogeephoto.com/laird_photo.htm

Ann Laird has been making custom rain gear and tripod covers for nature photographers for several years now. You get personlized service and a money-back guarantee. She has a generic rain cover for a camera body w/ 70-200mm lens for about $50.00.
