S45: Coming to America

If you want to be paranoid and go all "Lone Gunmen" that's fine.
I've seen a number of articles the past couple of days talking
about a lot of consumer electronic and Christmas season merchandise
shipping running behind because of the lockout.
Again, only low cost, heavier or bulkier consumer goods are usually shipped via ocean containers and are/were affected by the West Coast Harbor (sea port) lockout.

I doubt very much new digicams are shipped via ocean freight and not AIR. A 40 foot ocean container can hold probably 4,000 to 5,000 G3s. At say a cost of $500 each that would be over $2 million each container.

You just don't want to ship it the slow way with that much inventory value in transit. I bet more expensive digicams, particularly new products, are all shipped by AIR.

I'm interested in knowing this too. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Jason
PS: I haven't yet had any problems with the focus. What problems
are people having? Please be specific so I can test this and post
the pics (eg. no "it just won't focus" type remarks).
He told me the S45 is coming to the US after Thanksgiving this year
(moved up from a previous release date of January).

Thank you very much for your helpful comments and pardon my
ignorance because I really am totally new to all of this but what
does CA stand for?
Me bad, sorry. I have typed too much lately. CA = Chromatic Aberration. It's that "blue line" or "halo" you see around borders particularly when transitioning from white to dark colors or say photographing trees with a bright sky behind them.

I realize most cameras have this, but to me it was a pet peeve because the S110v and S300 had virtually almost none whereas the S200 (which I upgraded blindly to) had then a dime a dozen in wide angle... and the S230 actually has them too. But I already knew what I was getting into.

The same tip that seems to work for my Elph should work for the S45: try some photos with some zoom, try 2x and 3x.. The problem of course is that you have to be farther away, but seems to get rid of them.
I do see the problem now that you point it out.
It seems almost like a blue tinge although I do think for the
untrained eye you'd have to be looking for it. If you could tell me
more about this I'd be very appreciative.
That's exactly what it is!
Sorry to be such a "newbie" and thanks again!
Everybody is born a newbie and I am not an expert by any means (at least on the photographic creative side). I am just a gadget-geek that works as a programmer, and hopefully expand my knowldge of photography over time :-)

PS: Thank you very much for posting the pictures! Other than those problems the pictures look really nice with rich details.

There are 3 quick shots. The people shots are my kids and the cat
is just something I took on the way to work this morning. I will
add more soon.

Grizzly
I was able to spot some CA's... on the eyes of your baby (from
white to black, in the center of the eye) and also in the picture
with one of your kids in the car- look far right on the picture,
the line of the car interior, when transitioning from the white of
the wall.

It doesn't seem that bad since the camera has more resolution and
thus the CA's appear smaller.. but of course more pictures would
have to be taken to check.

Other than that the pictures do look superb. Given what I saw on
CA's , I am not all rushed now to think about jumping from an S230
to an S45... would love to see more pics of coures (and not that I
was going to just jump.. . hehe).

Nevermind, Raist. I knew I'd find the answer somewhere on this site
by doing my homework. It was a bit tough at first with just the
abbreviation but I got it: chromatic aberrations. :)

Looking at the examples of CA that Phil posts next to his
explanation at

http://www.dpreview.com/learn/key=chromatic+aberrations

I begin to realize JUST how minor the CA in my S45 shots are. In
fact unless you're looking at them at the original size and REALLY
searching for them I challenge anyone to see them at all. I printed
those shots on 4x6 high gloss photo film cards on my Canon S800 and
you can't see the CA without with a magnifying glass (which I
didn't actually try so I'm not even sure it would show up then).
I'll try an 8x10 next.

I'll also continue to post more pics for your review as I take them.

Thank you again for your comments.
I bet the S45 CA's are smaller because of the increased resolution and probably just higher quality overall than say, the S200 and S230. Also the S200/S230 are smaller. Of course, Canon had to mock with good (S110v) qand screwed that up. OH well.

Hi guys,

I'll have to take a look at the store to compare the S45 with the S40 to see if there's a difference since I'm not exactly sure. All I can say is I don't really have any glare issues to mention even in sunlight. If you hold the camera at an angle with the power off the surface of the LCD is reflective. Does that mean there's no coating?

Grizzly
Does the S45 have the same LCD screen as the S40 or have they
improved it by giving it an antireflective coating? Thanks

Jason

so you would trade your s230 for an s45? given the added size? btw the way one prob i had with the smalll s110 was the camera cant be held steadily coz of size and slow lens, is it still the case for s230?

Hoho, you see? I'm not lone already. I don't think it's parranoid. All I'm saying is this world of business is not as simple as me and my neighbour. Scandals are here, there, everywhere in this world, in every corner, so what? we'll have to live with. I still go shopping, traveling, spending money, but just be causious. I would pretty much trust you as a person, doing business with you, maybe see you on ebay? hehe. This is a faithful world over all. But sometimes, when we deal with business, spending hundreds of dollars, I just want everyone think of it logically, rather than believe whatever a representative said. Whatever he said, might be true, might not. I'd rather believe the common judgement from most of people here that canon is trying to sell off s40 before marketing s45. And thanks to Wallpirate to confirm it. Although I'm not happy with this, this is the way business is. A consumer can't live with their attitude will have to find another way. I think canon has balanced it, potential lost and potential gain. I will probably wait for s45, I'm not in that hurry. Hope we all have happy hunting for our DCs :)
From now on when they tell us something, it will be very hard to
believe anything that they say.
Canon USA states "The PowerShot G3 camera will be available in
October". Perhaps (?) that means that they will ship a token
number of G3s in November, but that the camera won't be widely
available until next year. That would be consistent with
Amazon.com's posted release date of December 30, 2002.

I've had no problems with it thus far

I previously owned a G1 which was pilfered by some reprobate at my place of employment.

I haven't done any direct comparisons to the G1, but some general impressions might be:

Much less chromatic aberration than the G1 (which was terrible)
I miss the extra stops on the wide end of the aperature

Improved interface compared to the G1 with the exception of selecting the resolution and compression on JPEGs and setting the self timer mode. There is no button for self timer mode changes.

I'm not sure of the utility of being able to select the drive (one shot, continuous, high speed) in this camera.
Shorter battery life
Much cleaner form factor - compact with fewer warts / protrusions

As far as image quality, I haven't really put the camera in any challenging situations which might bring out chromatic aberrations or autofocus problems yet.
Here are a few snapshots
Nothing spectacular.

I do see some CA on the shirt/vest of the fisherman, now that I look closely...
As an owner of the S45, I'd like to ask how you like the picture
quality of this camera. The reason that I ask is that I'm a G2
owner and my brother-in-law had purchased an S40. We were both
disappointed with the image quality of his S40 and he returned it
for a G2. However, I really liked the form factor of the S40. So
the question to you is are you happy with the image quality of your
S45?

Well, I recently was looking at the S40 in bestbuy and thought the LCD screen was terrible. Looking at it from any angle beside strait on yielded a distorted picture, like looking at the screen of a laptop at an angle. The screen wasn't that bright either. Is the LCD screen of the S45 viewable in bright sunlight? That would be great if you could compare the screen of your S45 to an S40 in the store.

Hey Raist3d.......I wonder if CA would qualify as a defect???? defect=no restock fee.....I'm in the same boat but im afraid if I buy the 45 I will not carry it every where. Oh when will they make the ultimate digital and stop making new models? When man reaches the end of the internet.

Wallpirate,

Did you use auto mode (as opposed to programmed: spot) for these pics where the camera selects the focus point(s)?

In image http://www.pbase.com/image/6476256 , it looks like the camera and/or photographer selected the person at the far right as the focus point as opposed to the middle person.

I have decided on getting the s45, and I live in the states. What I'd like to ask (whoever is reading and has the knowlege) is whether it would be stupid to buy a s45 now on ebay for $554, or should I wait utill the US version comes out.

2 parts in my mind to this question, 1) price, will it drop significantly? 2) I havent read anything about this: if I buy a foreign version will I need a US power adapter fot the battery charger (this is something i know nothing about) Does canon ship the current s45 version with multiple chargers, specific to different countries power outlets?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts (((z)))

It's a universal battery charger (external)

There is no need for other chargers but you may need an adaptor for different socket configurations.
As far a price goes, hard to say.

Probably the same as the S40 when the prices stabilize, judging from the prices in Japan.

Other things you didn't list but might consider

US warranty
Language of manual/documentation (can download the manual though)

Software bundle (Mine is universal and looks the same as the bundle that came with by US market Canons)

Since the G2 will fall in price after the G3 is out, why not consider it?

It has a faster lens, swivel screen (which I miss sorely), and much better battery life as well as the ability to use off camera flash and lens adaptors.
I think it's a better camera (for me) but bigger and uglier.

Since I bought mine on Ebay from the same guy who is selling them for $554, I'm probably not qualified to say where it is stupid or not... :)

Basically I needed a camera right away and the S45 was what I wanted, so I did it. I'm sure they will be cheaper when they are sold in the US market. The charger included works fine in the U.S., and the manuals are in English, though photocopied. The software installer is universal. My camera came set to Japanese, but was easily changed to English.

Well Its good to know the charger wouldn't be problematic. As far as getting a G2, The size of the camera is important to me and in the foreseeable future I don't intend on using external components. So thats why I'd go with the s45, even if the g2 has more features the size is pretty important to me. Thanks for bringing up the warrenty bit, hadnt thought of that, so with that in mind and considering that the s40 is about $100 bucks cheaper (of the cheapest prices ive seen) - so perhaps that is the price point the s45 will be sold at - I think I'll wait for the US version. Lets hope it comes out soon...

You should definitely wait until the S45 comes out in the US. I don't think Canon will hold it out too long or after Christmas. They want to maximize their sales so they better release it around Thanksgiving.
