have a 'scratching like' background noise with Steadyshot ON with Video throughout the entire video sequence.

and virtually silent with it OFF.

Can someone confirm if they notice the same thing on their a33/a55.

Thanks,

I can't directly comment on the A33/A55 since I have an A100/A700 but I can tell you there is a noise when SSS is operating. I notice it on longer exposures and I guess you could characterize it as "scratching like".

I guess that this is one problem that may be solved by using an external microphone ?
And now you understand why Sony went with Lens-IS for Nex. If they had IBIS, people (especially p&s upgrades) would have been whining about overheating and noise -- potentially a far worse marketing disaster.

The need a new IBIS system that doesn't overhear and is silent. Time to junk the old Minolta version of SSS they have been using.

Not a good solution zep.

I'm not so sure. As it stands, a good bump/knock can send Sony's SSS into expensive repair land (even when off it seems if like dropped on a carpet)while it won't affect Can/Nik cameras at all since they are OS.

It is just not possible to optimize a DSLR for both shooting videos and shooting still photos. A particular model will always be better at one or the other. The Panasonic GH2 is great at shooting videos, but with those nice fast primes I would lose 3 stops of light because there is no IBIS. The generation of Sony A33/55 are better for still photos but they can shoot great videos as well.

True. In-lens seems better suited to video

Disagree. AS/SSS was designed with still shots in mind and is still very useful for that - especially in the non-SLT cameras. Perhaps they could add a mode to the SLT cameras where it acts like the SLRs - the SSS only activates when the shutter is pressed. This would help counteract the heating problem when shooting stills.

In-body does not preclude Sony from releasing lenses with stabilization (but you would likely have to disable the in-body mechanism).

I concur for the A700, it does a "scritch scritch scritch..." during the whole exposure, the first time I was really puzzled.
