I am purchasing my first DSLR, Canon EOS 7D, body only with two lenses — 85 mm 1.8 and 17-55mm. What other accessories would you recommend besides a memory card? Thank you for your help!

A good strap and a good bag.

Those two things, to me, make a huge difference when moving/traveling with your stuff.

My favorite strap is the Optech Super Classic strap with Pro Loop connectors. Those specific connectors are important to me because when you bring the 7D up to your eye, they fall out of the way effortlessly, and the strap itself is soft and cushy while still being fairly compact. Makes the camera feel light. This is the strap I wish I had discovered years ago.

As for bags, I guess that depends on what you plan to do and where you plan to go.

And please remember: take lots of pictures and have lots of fun!

Extra battery and CF card.

Accessories will depend greatly upon what kind of shooting you will be doing. Can you elaborate? For instance, if you do a lot of portraits you might consider an external flash and / or tripods, or even a grip for portrait oriented shooting.

Thank you all for your responses. I practically live on this site for the last few weeks trying to decide what camera, what lenses… Anyway, mostly I will be chasing my little kids around and taking portraits of friends and family for now

If the bulk or weight doesn't bother you I would get a grip with extra battery. Also a good external flash and diffuser might come in handy.

One thing that I bought that turned out to be a great addition was the Hoodman Hoodeye eyecup. It makes shooting more comfortable, and has the added benefit of blocking stray light from entering the viewfinder. (may not be useful if you shoot with glasses)

Buy a ThinkTank Urban Disguise. It will fit your 7D and two lenses perfectly, with a myriad of hidden pockets for all your other stuff. I am currently traveling in Morocco with a similar setup (35 L and 100L) and loving the ease of use. I agree the strap choice as well.

Best, Chuck

Hoods for each of your lenses.

Lowepro 200 camera bag is super nice. Has a hidden weather proofing section that pops out conveniently around your camera bag. Single strap sling is great too for removal and storage of camera without having to take the backpack off.

If you take a lot of pictures outside, a circular polarizer (B+W is good) and UV lens filter (for protection of lens as well).

Lightroom3
Pc with at least 4gb ram and dedicated video card and fast drive
2tb USB backup drives
Allwaysync software
Uv filters
External flash
Extra battery
Extra cf
Tripods
Bags to hold all this

Get the 50mm f1.4 instead of the 85mm. The 17-55 f2.8 rocks!

70-200 is f2.8 + 1.4xii

Thank you all! You r helping me tremendously!

Why 50 instead of 85? Would the 50mm prime overlap with the 17-55? Or would it have a longer reach since I will be using it on a crop body?

The 17-55 will have a longer reach on the crop body too. I would stick with your original plan to get the 85. It's a great portrait lens, very fast, and it's not covered already by your zoom.

Also, I say skip the UV filters. Protecting your lens is what the hood is for; all UV filters do as far as I can tell is degrade image quality.

depend on your shooting style.. here are some:

camera bag
tripod
lens cleaning kit
camera remote control
UV filter
polariser and ND filter
battery
CF card
editing software ( photoshop , lightroom ...etc)
external hard drive

cheap UV filters like tiffen do degrade the IQ.. good quality filters like Hoya and especially B+W are quite useful

good qu

Any suggestions on software? I enjoy editing but never used neither photoshop or lightroom. Thanks for the feedback! This will save me another three weeks of research

  • Lens hoods specific for each lens
  • extra battery
  • external flash if you plan on doing a lot of indoor photos
  • good tripod
I also like the vertical grip, but not everyone does. Also, the first thing I put on the camera is a 3rd party strap. I like the Op/Tech Pro Loop since it has nice wide & grippy webbing, and can be disconnected in a flash.

Lightroom 3 is a must have. Buy Photoshop when your ready

I would still go with the 50 1.4 over 85mm 1.8. I own both.
