A Site Dedicated just for The SX30Is...For Condor - II

infraRaven has already posted new FZ100 vs SX30IS comparison samples.

I will start the details analysis specially of those that could be also compared with previous infraRaven HS10 shots of the same subject or equivalent compostions.

Here you have infraRaven's FZ100 vs SX30IS longest end zooms (600mm - 840mm) Tower Clock details comparisons.

I wanted to make a triple comparison (incluiding HS10 infraRaven previous shot from the same Tower Clock), but I realized that they were not equivalent. I will repost my previous FZ100 vs HS10 comparison of those original shots to give you an idea.

A question to infraRaven:
Were these Tower Clock shots taken hanheld?

What about the FZ100 vs HS10 same Tower Clock shots you posted on August 11? Thanks in advance.

As I announced, I'm reposting Aug 11 infraRaven FZ100 vs HS10 full zoom Tower Clock comparison samples to allow you to understand why I can not use that HS10 sample to be compared with the new FZ100 vs SX30IS samples (since it is obvious that present FZ100 shot was taken closer than Aug 9 shots). I do not know also if in both cases shots were taken hanheld or not.

It would be very useful if infraRaven could take a new pair of FZ100 vs SX30IS Tower Clock shots from that previous more distant spot to allow us a more fair (light would be not the same, I know) "triple" comparison.

I'm including those Aug 9 shots, since now we have acces to its "Original full size" versions.

The following comparisons were made when we just had acces to the "Large" versions of infraRaven images (not to the full-size as now)
By the way, I'm just comparing the clock tower's photos since they are the unique FZ100 long-end-zoom (108mm; 600mm equiv.) vs HS10 long-end-zoom (126mm; 720mm equiv.) comparison in the group.

Visually (FZ100 on the left - HS10 on the right)
(Expand them)

Thanks for posting these comparison Condor.

HS10 is definitely better than FZ100 in the long-end zoom comparison. Had infraRaven shot the clock closer in HS10, I think the SX30IS will get good competition.

Let us wait for the SX30IS (farther version) so we can compare it side-by-side with the HS10 and FZ100.

Mike is also redoing his "Quick Comparison of SX30IS, HS10, and FZ35" samples to really inlcude HS10 full size images.

That would be another excellent source for a real and fair HS10 vs SX30IS long-end-zoom comparison, and maybe better since they would be performed at the same time, as far as I understand.

I am really torn between SX30 and HS10 now. But I might end up buying HS10 considering it is cheaper now (less than $400). =D

This time I took infraRaven Swans full zoom comparisons, as the unique distant wildlife subject in this new bunch.

It was hard to find relevant details, but I did what I could.

Zooming is not needed as the FZ100 takes the beating in detail retention and sharpness. =D

Thanks for the comparison Condor.

I really enjoy all your pixel based caparisons.
Do you plan to buy any superzoom?
And when will you decide?

I think the evidence is now overwhelming that the SX30 is better than the FZ100 and HS10 for detail. Of course the FZ100 has other advantages, but the SX30 wins easily in detail. But we're missing one camera, the FZ40, which might do nearly as well as the Canon on detail while keeping many of the FZ100's advantages. Since we don't seem to have a volunteer with both an SX30 and an FZ40, can we glean anything from these threads?

The SX30IS is clearly a mile ahead of either the HS10 or the FZ100 in terms of overall image quality and detail, and for me that always has to come first. The 35x zoom instead of 24x is just a bonus for me, although it would be nice to have that full-resolution 11fps burst mode, what's the point of having 11 images that aren't as good as they would have been with a Canon? Your images are always going to be second-best. I've made my mind up :)

The FZ100 definitely fares better at wide angle than full zoom. Still, I think I give the detail edge to the SX30, though in a couple shots (dirt, leaves against sky) the SX30's CA is crippling.

Why not go somewhere in the middle.

It is a toss between HS10 and FZ40. =D

I think the FZ100 won this time. The CA/PF of SX30IS really sucks. =D
This is what I obtained from the Wide Angle Countryside samples.

Do you plan to buy any superzoom?
I'm defintetly planning buying a superzoom. In fact I'm planning to buy my 3 levels of photography sets pretty soon. It's time.
  • Compact-size-level kit: A double kit. One compact camera for 80% to 90% of my normal life shots; groups, parties, tourism, landscapes, macros, portraits, etc. And one compact for my amateur birding identification hobby, a superzoom. To carry both almost all the time and everywhere.
So far, I'm leaning towards LX3 + (SX30IS or HS10)
  • Middle-size-level kit: Basically some sort of GH2 + 14-140mm + 100-300mm. For some special ocasions or travels when it would be worth it and secure to carry it
  • Large (not extra large or professional)-level-kit: Which so far would be 7D + 400mm 5.6. Just for beautiful bird photos in very specific and special birding ocasions.
And when will you decide?
LX3 is almost decided. And I think I need just one or two more weeks to decide about the compact superzoom (more leaned toward SX30IS so far, but I'm still wating for fair HS10 vs SX30IS long-end-zoom comparisons of distant wildlife subjects, specially birds).

I will have to wait some months for GH2 and 100-300mm launching, comparisons, and unbiass early adopters comments and samples.

7D + 400mm 5.6 is almost decided, but since I need to learn with some kind of GH2 kit first, maybe while I'm learning it appears some new 8D or similar.

Well FZ35 is out of the league in the long-end-zoom results so better stay with FZ40.

I may yet. Though to be honest the HS10 leaves me cold, so it would probably be the FZ40. On the other hand I might yet go with the FZ35. I'm not rushing to judgment.

Yes, that's its glaring flaw at this stage. Still, it's a known quantity with excellent IQ, and considerably less expensive. It might do til the next go round.
