Hi All

Thanks to everyone for the help I have received other the last 2 years with my D700 which is the best camera I have ever owned .

I have owned all the great Nikon Lenses 14 24mm2.8, 24 70 2.8mm, 70 200mmf2.8vrII 105mm2.8 afs micro 50 f1.4g.All have been fantastic IQ, DR, Quality is fantastic I have enjoyed all this but now sold most of my kit,

Only have 20mmf2.8afd 35mmf2afd 85mm f1.4afd D700 body left, but now all going due to weight just to old to carry this around.

Nikon I love D700 and lenses but please make a Nikon Evil Camera with this quality I am sure you would have 1000s of fans waiting to buy this system.

In the meantime anyone any have a clue what I should buy?

Take a look at a few of the thousands of pics I have taken With D700 and Nikon lenses.

my $0.02:

lighter and still great - leica M9
lighter and still affordable - olympus e-pl1

I have seen some very nice work done with the e-pl1 by different people, using the stock lens. The Panasonic pancake is the current best wide, Cosina comes up soon with a 20mm F/0.95, and there are macro and tele choices with good quality.

Of course, this does not come close to what you can do with the D700, but it is lighter, and it is available now.

I certainly hope that Nikon will come up with something similar, but for now, we don't even have solid rumors about it :)

Robert,

There are several good options out there. It really depends on a few factors. The first is thing you need to figure out is what is an acceptable weight? That is for body, lens, battery and all. This will help to determine if you can do with a small Nikon DX body like the D3100, or if you need to step down to a Micro4/3 or even down to a high end P&S like the Panasonic LX5 or Canon G11.

The second thing to determine is what AF speed you need. Someone mentioned the Olympus E-PL1 - it is a great landscape camera, but would problably frustrate someone who wants to shoot sports.

So if you figure out those two main things, I think your choices become clearer.

BTW - I use my D60 quite a bit with my 55-200 VR lens (and Canon 500D closeup filter) because it is so light that I can take it along effortlessly. My D700 with 70-200 VRII gives much better IQ and is much better for sports.... but it sure is heavy and bulky to lug around all the time. So I understand your concern with weight.

At least take heart in that camera manufacturers are moving in that direction. My M4/3rds kit takes amazing pictures, and I am happy with them, until I take the 5DII out and remember how much better it performs... if you sell the D700 and get a small camera, you should be fine... until you pick another FFer up at a store and play with it...

Soon my friend... but not THAT soon...

Lateral-thinking suggestion: get to know some young photographers in your area*, keep your stripped-down kit and get them to do the carrying for you. I bet there are loads of kids who would be happy to swap some donkey work for a chance to learn from you, and a chance to play with some top-notch gear!

Hi All
Thank you so far for the great response.
I have thought about Leica M9 but with my old eyes need an auto focus camera.
I have read about Canon G12 and Nikon P7000 at Photokina will try them out ASAP

Also like the look of Panasonic GH2 but not seen any images from this yet only video.
Fuji X100 but fixed lens.
Smaller is the way to go for me but can any match the great quality of D700?
Will have to wait and see.

Have you tried the R-Strap? I use it with a tiny think tank bag just for a 28, 50, 85 prime set as my light kit. Carrying the weight differently may get you a couple extra years with the D700.

Only you can decide on the weight issue.

The D700 is light weight compared with the D3X.

Is the D300s + 16-85 zoom too much weight?

Maybe you need a tiny point and shoot?

A D700 + 24-120 seems like a light weight system to me.

A photo-backpack and a tripod help the weight issue a great deal.

I'm considered an "old boy" get tired easy had a heart attack, struggle with walking uphill but! love to carry D700+ 24/85 with a back pack containing 70/210 f4 spare batts remote control etc, its quite painful at times especially when out with younger photographers. However like you I consider D700 the best and will not give it up, the pain is worth it.

Some time ago, I decided that all the equipment that I use professionally was getting too heavy. For work, I must bear the pain but for pleasure and especially for travel. I decided ti lighten my load. I have experimented with many small cameras i.e the G10 and the G 11 that are great nut whose optical viewfinder are really useless [I cannot shoot looking at the LCD screen]. I did love the Panasonic LX3, a real beauty that my daughter "borrowed" from me. It did not have a viewfinder bur I got a clip on 25mm one that I used on wide shots. The LX 5 with it's longer zoom and the ability to use a EVF may be the ideal small; camera. I am planning to get one as I was blown away by the quality of the images, no doubt due to that great Leica Summicron lens. Good luck old age is a real *****.

All the best,

You will have to compromise somewhere. Where is up to you. Something like a Nikon D7000 with a 18-55, 55-300 & 35 f1.8 might be a viable alternative - but coming from a D700 & pro glass - i don't know - you'll need to decide if you can live with that. Some of the newer compacts are nice - but with their tiny sensors - you can't expect FX sensor performance - though they do have their own charms & advantages.

Any camera is (like most things) is a compromise. 2 - 3 (or more) cameras for specific tasks - might make more sense - then expecting to find 1, do-it-all camera - that likely will NEVER exist.

Cheers.

Well, I'm thinking about a GH2 + 7-14, 14-45, 20 f/1.7 pancake.

Not FF IQ there, but not that bad either, and much much lighter. The 7-14 is 14-28 equivalent and seems pretty good optically. The 14-45 is 28-90 equivalent, so a good walk-around lens.

Good luck.
